to Meet Growing Student Interest

the department of Chinese and
Japanese studies at the Hebrew
University has recently been ex-

panded and this year will award
its first set of bachelor degrees.
This trimester, there are three
specialists, on Japan and eight . .oz
China, several of whom were born
or spent many years in Chinese=
speaking areas. In the entering
class at the Hebrew University.
(total student body 18,000) there
are approximately 40 students
majoring in Chinese and Japanese
studies, as compared to 20 two
years ago, Emphasis has been
placed on building up a library.
Over the past few years, mem-
bers of the department have been
concerned with acquiring mate-
rial for the documentation center,.
the one on China in the whole
country.
Taking advantage of the unique
position of the Hebrew University
in being able to train scholars in
both Chinese and Islamic studies,
the department has a special re-
search interest in the relationship
between China and the Middle
East both historically and in con-
temporary terms.

Agudath Israel of Detroit will
host a catered melave malka for

the Young Israel Center of Oak-
Woods.
The recently appointed director
of Aguda activities, Rabbi Eph-
raim Spero, will report on present

Rabbi Spero, a graduate of the
