College Head Asked to R ebuke Biased Editor NEW YORK- (JTA)—The Amer- ican Jewish Congress has called on Joseph Murray, president . of Queens College, to reprimand the author of an article two weeks ago on Forest Hills in the studentnews- paper "Voice of SEEK" which charged that "once again the white bigots are predominantly Jews." In a telegram, Theodore J. Kal- ish, chaiiinsin of the AJCongress' New York Metropiltan Council, de- clared: "We find it disturbing that the SEEK program, which we have - supported= an avenue of oppor- tunity for needy students, should perpetrate racism and anti-Semi- tism." Six Black students in the SEEK propfram at the City Uni- versity of New York, have also denounced the SEEK article. In their two-page statement, the students — including the vice president of the student govern- ment at City College Voice of SEEK and the vice chairman of the education affairs committee of the City College student sen- ate—deplored the article "which unfairly imputes to the entire Jewish people anti-black, racist sentiments in connection with op- position to a proposed low-in- come housing project in Forest Hills." Noting that George Hopkinson, the author of the article, was not a SEEK student, the statement de- clared that he "certainly does not speak for the over-whelming ma- jority of those enrolled in SEEK." 'Meanwhile, Agudath Israel of America appealed to President Nixon to intervene personally to halt construction of the project in Forest Hills to prevent that pre- dominantly Jewish neighborhood from becoming a "ghost town." In a letter to Nixon, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, chairman of the Orthodox group, described the President as "the single per- son with the courage of convic- lion and the poWer" to stop the" THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS BUY OR LEASE - Car of Your Choice k' project- Friday, haw! 7, 1972-9 The Agudath Israel statement said, "It will certainly not benefit .04.44,44,42/4-4,244,4,44,4r44.44,44N our national goals if scatter-site * *Lowest Rentals .4, purchase option * low-income housing is built at the * BEST SERVICE expense of destroying a well-knit : t;' * Factory trellised experts * Jewish community which has at * Quickest Results great sacrifice built many cultural *, ADD-a-TYPE- SHOPS, •It I and educational institutions to a11 00 serve its local needs." 68k4°3° HARRY ABRAM ANY MAKE OR MODEL MAJOR DISCOUNTS TO ALL 891-1350; 3524166 Home LI II-4119 Women of Jewish National Fund 42nd Annual Donor Tea Tuesday, January 18, 1972, 12 Noon Congregation Shaarey Zedek GUEST SPEAKER Rabbi Reuben Slonlm, Radio and TV Commentator, Writer, Journalist and Mid-East Specialist.
