Editor: The Jewish News:
As author of "The Indestructible
Jews," may I thank your reviewer
for the interesting and perceptive
review he gave my book in your
Nov. 26 -issue.
However, the reviewer also
should have given his readers my
views on the relationship of the
state of Israel to the world and
to the Diaspora. Then my views
on the Diaspora would not have
seemed quite as quixotic.
May I turn reviewer of my own

book for a moment? I view Jewish
history as a three-act kabalistic
drama, each act • 2,000 years long.
The first act, from Abraham to
Jesus, evolves like a Greek pre-
destination drama in which the
Jews seemingly are trained for
survival in a coming exile.
The second act—from Jesus to
Ben-Gurion—evolves like a French
existentialist drama, in which the
Jews are strewn as exiles to the
four corners of the world.
The third act—from Ben-Gurion
into the future—which proceeds
like a drama of the absurd—is a
speculation on the future role of
the Diaspora in relation to the
world and to Israel.
I make the observations that
whereas in the first act there
was a Jewish state, but no Dias-
pora, in the second act, there
was a Diaspora but no Jewish
state.
Now, as the curtain is going up
on the third act, there is, for the
first time in Jewish history, both
a Diaspora and a Jewish state. I
also make the assertion that both
the Diaspora and the state of
Israel are essential to future
Jewish survival.
As for Toynbee, he is not "a
new prophet for Dimot." Though
I don't agree with his political
views on Jews and Arabs, I do
have respect for his insights into
history. He has as much right to
call the ancient Jews fossils as I
have a right to vie the ancient
Greeks as barbarians. Let us ap-
ply different standards to Toynbee's
political judgements and to his
craft as a historian.
Sincerely,
MAX I. DIMONT

Our Face Is Read
Editor, The Jewish News:
Your editorial and background
material is very informative, but
I suggest frequent checking for cor-
rectness. Geography seems to be
a particularly week spot here, as
a sampling from the recent few
issues will show: Riga is not in
the Ukraine, but Ekaterinoslav
(not Ekaterinoskov)--later called
Dnepropetrovsk—is; Kovno was
never in Poland; and nobody
speaks Czechoslovakian (Czech
and Slovak, perhaps, two similar
but different languages).
Other inaccuracies can be found
in the names of people as, for
example, in that of the German-
Jewish (though baptized) compos-
er Friedrich (sic) Mendelssohn-
Bartholdy.
Sincerely,
JOSHUA LTFSCHITZ

Wrong Prayer
Editor, The Jewish News:
It is said that when William
Rogers was in Israel he asked Mrs.
Meir to see the Western Wall. So
she took him there. As he knelt
in prayer, with hands raised to
heaven, he asked Mrs. Meir:
"Does God really hear the pray-
ers recited here"?
Mrs. Meir: "Absolutely."
Rogers: "Oh great Almighty
God, may there soon be peace in
Israel! Are you listening, God"?
■ Mrs. Meir: "God is listening,"
she reassured him.
Rogers: "And God may there
also be peace in the entire world,
are you listening God"?
Mrs. Meir: "God is listening very
carefully," she reassured him.
Rogers: "Oh please God, please
force Israel to accept my Rogers
withdrawal plan from all the oc-
cupied areas!"
Mrs. Meir: "Now you're talking
to the Wall." She pulled him to
his feet, led him to the airport
and waved goodby.
