Gerald Gorelick Gets
Taste of Israeli Life
at Hebrew University

JERUSALEM — Gerald Arthur
Gorelick, 20-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Milton Gorelick of Les-
lie Ave., Oak Park, is spending
his junior year at the Hebrew Uni-
versity.
A onetime leader in United Syna-
gogue Youth at Cong. Beth Sha-
lom, Gorelick attended the Univer-
sity of Michigan where he joined
the Hillel Foundation.
At the Hebrew University, he
is one of some 4.000 students from
abroad out of a total enrollment
of 18,000. As a result of the great
increase in the number of over-
seas students, special facilities to
deal with their needs have been
opened on the Mount Scopus cam-

Gorelick has met Israeli students
who he feels "play a much more
passive role in the educational
process than do their counterparts
in the States." During the ulpan,

To get a taste of kibutz life, he
pent a week at Sde Eliahu on the
J ordanian border, south of the
S ea of Galilee.
His introduction to Hasidic tradi-
tions (an ultraorthodox Jewish
sect) and hospitality came on Sim-
hat Torah. Having wandered into
one of their tiny synagogues in
the religious Mea Shearim section
of Jerusalem, he was invited to
join them after services in a fes-
tive meal where he was treated
as an honored guest.

Gorelick studied Hebrew for
many years but joined the spe-
cial university-sponsored ulpan
(intensive Hebrew language
course) when he arrived in Is-
rael last July. At U. of M., he
is a mathematics major, but
plans a second major in philo-
sophy. He now is taking courses
in Bible, philosophy and Jewish
history, as well as Hebrew lan-
guage.
