To Study Drug Use

ATLANTA (JTA) — A special
committee to develop a program
to consider use and abuse of drugs
by Jewish youths has been an-
nounced by the Jewish Children's
Service, a multistate agency with
headquarters here. The agency
serves Jews in Georgia, Florida,
North and South Carolina, Vir-
ginia and Washington, D.C.

LONDON (JTA) — The Inter-
national Council of Jews from
Czechoslovakia denounced as a
"contemptible invention" a recent
Series of broadcasts by Prague
radio alleging Jewish collabora-
tion with Nazis in occupied
Czechoslovakia during World War
II. A statement by the council
said it would be "beneath con-
tempt" to respond to such allega-
tions except that they "will once
more stir up anti-Semitic senti-
ments in the guise of anti-Zion-
ism."
The Prague broadcasts claimed
that Jews in the Czech capital
collaborated with the Nazis "in
organizing the emigration of Zion-
ist elite and persons in whom both
parties were interested" to
Palestine during the war. They
claimed that the Nazis used this
method to infiltrate their agents
into Palestine, and when British
intelligence got wind of the ruse,
Britain "took action by sinking the
ships in which thousands of in-
nocent Jewish refugees perished
together with the Nazi agents."
A spokesman for the Council urged
Cie British Foreign and Common-
wealth office to "repudiate this
slander."
In another development, 11
Jew and one Czech "suspected"
of having Jewish ancestry are
included on a list of 74 Czech and
Slovak authors whose books have
been banned in the Czechoslovak
Republic.
The organ of the Czechoslovak
Communist Party, Listy, published
the names of five Jewish writers
and 13 others who are living in
exile and whose books may not

Another Jewish author, Ivan
Klima, who is presumably living
in Czechoslovakia, has been banned
by the Communist Party for alleg-
ed "organized resistance to the
regime."
The exiled writer believed to be
Jewish is Ota Sik, the economist
of the Dubcek regime who denied
in 1969 that he was Jewish.
Listy also published the names
of 54 members of the Communist
Party who have been expelled,
which includes six Jews or sons of
Jewish parents: Hana Belohradska,
No Fleischman, Karel Siktanc, Jan
Stern, Oldrich Schuler and Lucian
Wichs. All are presumably living
in Czechoslovakia.

Tourism to Israel
Continues Growth

Israel tourism has burgeoned
this past year, according to Uzi
Michaeli, director of Midwestern
states for the Israeli Government
Tourist Office. By the time 19•41
figures are totaled, over 630,000
are expected to have visited Israel.
In 1970, 430,000 came.
Israel has enjoyed over. $100,-
000,000 in earnings from tourism,
but there is a practical , as well
as financial aspect to it Visitors,
during their stay, get to know
Israelis, and learn to understand
the "bows and whys" of the state

It is for this same reason that
youth tourism is important.
Roughly 25 per cent of the tour-
ist trade is comprised of young
people.
Because of these large numbers,
special accommodations for youth
are being made. Camping and
hostel facilities are being offered;
and for those unable to live on
overcrowded kibutzim, alternative
programs are being developed:

Crime Rise in Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A rise
in crimes of violence is Israel
during the past year was reported
by Prisons Commissioner Aryeh
Nir. He told the Jerusalem Jour-
nalists Association that while
crime did not increase in absolute
numbers, the nature of crimes has
changed.
Instead of simple burglaries,
there has been an upsurge in
daylight robberies accompanied
by violence. The robbers some-
times will kill, he said, as
demonstrated in several recent
bank holdups.
According to •Nir, the more
serious nature of crime here
stems from a breakdown of values
among Israeli youth. He said the
importance of the family unit
should be emphasized in school.

Cemetery Marred;
'Zionists' Blamed

LONDON (JTA) — A Jewish
cemetery in Minsk has been dese-
crated, according to Jewish sources
in the Soviet Union.
A tablet in memory of Jewish
martyrs which bore the inscription
"We shall never forget nor forgive"
was defaced. The word "Jews" was
scribbled across the tablet.
Local Jews, who complained to
an offical, were told the desecra-
tion was a Zionist provocation.

Israel Editor Raps
American Jews

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Dr. Herzl
Rosenblum, editor of the Tel Aviv
daily Yediot Ahronot has published
an editorial critical of Philip Hoff-
man, president of the American
Jewish Committee, and of the
American- Jewish community in
general.
Hoffman is criticized for having
come to Jerusalem to d e f end
American foreign policy as it con-
cerns Israel, instead of going to
Washington to defend Israel's policy
as it relates to her own security.
On the subject of American
Jewry, Dr. Rosenblum indicts their
silence. "Six million American
• aws are silent. They were silent
during the Holocaust that con-
sumed European Jewry, and they
are once again silent while a catas-
trophe threatens the state of Is-
rael. And if they do decide to act,
they go the way of a Hoffman, who
comes to justify Sisco's politics in
respect of Israel.
