JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prof.
Herbert Marcuse, the doyen of the
American New Left, warned here
that Israel's present policies
might lead to a repetition of "the
very phenomena" which made
Jews strive for a state of their own
—isolation in a physical and men-
tal ghetto.

In his statement, he proposed

Replying to questions, he said he
agreed negotiations were essential
but that the format for such talks
was not important. He argued that
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat
was right in barring talks now
because negotiations while Egyp-
tian territory was occupied "means
acquiescing to the occupation."
Marcuse also said he favored
establishment of a Palestinian
state alongside Israel plus com-
pensation or resettlement of the
Arab refugees. He said Israel had
a right to exist "for persecuted
Jews."
Asked about his own feeling of
Jewishness, he said he identified
with the idea "as long as the Jews
were underdogs." Now that they
have become a people "who sit on
an underdog," he said, he found
identification "more difficult"

Motion Defeated
for Full Knesset
Probe of Antocar
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Knes-
set voted 54-26 to defeat an op-
position motion for a full-scale
parliamentary inquiry into the af-
fairs of the bankrupt Autocar Co.,
the Israeli subsidiary of the British
Leyland Motors Corp. that was
put into receivership last month.
The alleged scandal is currently
being probed by the Knesset fi-
nance committee at hearings open
to the press.
Gahal wanted a formal par-
liamentary commission of inquiry
appointed, a ntove opposed by the
Labor Alignment though not, ap-
parently, by all of its members.
Several alignment MX, walk-
ed out of the chamber before
the vote, as did three of the
National lteligleas Party, the
alignment's coalition partners.
Gahal was supported by the
New_ Communists, Uri Avineri
and filmdom Cohen.
Although the alignment ap-
parently does not want the in-
vestigation enlarged, it is not
altogether pleased by the way the
Knesset finance committee con-
ducts the inquiry.
Labor Party leaders in the
Knesset have charged that the
committee was arrogating to itself
the functions of a formal com-
mission of inquiry.
:The -charge was challenged by
Mordecai Zar, a Labor MK, who
resigned _later as head of the
alignment slate of the finance
committee. -
