Young Israeli Converts Inspire
Their Mates' Jewish Loyalties

By MOSHE RON
Jewish News Special
Israel t orresponz.-en:
TEL AVIV — Liturgical songs

were heard from the social club
at the religious kibutz Saad in the
south of Israel, on the way to Beer-
sheba. They were sung on the ter-
mination of a six-week ulpan, held
for 17 women converts and three
men converts to Judaism—mostly
young academicians, who have
lived in Israel since the Six - Day
War.
The converts sang, together with
bearded rabbis from the ministry
for religious affairs, a prayer
which contains the main principles
of the Jewish faith according to
Ramban. It is said on Fridays, but
this time it was sung we Thursday
evening to convince the rabbis that
the converts are well instructed
in the principles of the Jewish
faith.
"Yigdal Elokim" was sung by
the old rabbi, Dov Katz, chairman
of the rabbinical court in the min-
istry for religious affairs. Ile was
joined by the director of the Ulpan,
Rabbi Zeev Gottheld. The best
voice, without doubt, was that of
the convert Marlin Mavar, a beau-
tiful young German girl with a
slender figure, long hair falling
over her shoulders. A fine voice
was displayed by the Greek girl.
Tiarara Zakarkafi, a small, slim
girl clad in a blue robe. An Eng-
lish girl tried with success to ar-
ticulate the Hebrew words of the
prayer correctly in her singing.
The converts were happy when
Rabbi Katz welcomed them as
"fresh Jewish women and men."
He mentioned the famous converts
in Jewish history like Zipporah,
the wife of Moshe Rabenu, the
daughter of Jetro, Priest of Mid-
yon; the wife of Yohoshua Ben
Nun, the representative of Moshe

ing for several years in Kibutz
Mahnazim in the north of Israel,
presented flowers to two religious

teachers from the ulpan and said
to them: "You are our mothers

A second convert, an English

came to the ceremony and bestow-

verts. The chairman of Kibutz
Saad, Josef Ginzburg, said: "It is
difficult to be a Jew." Shula
answered: "During our six weeks'
stay on the kibutz we have become
fully aware of the seriousness of
the Jewish religion".

councellor of the ministry, Rabbi

tadrut, Menahem Hacohen, who
was the initiator of the ulpanim for

the Jewish faith and should in-
fluence their Jewish husbands in
the kibutzim to lead a more Jewish
