Later, City Health Commissioner Mary C. McLaughlin told the Jew- ish Telegraphic Agency that there was no recruitment of personnel by her department on the basis of "racial and ethnic criteria." Dr. MCLaughliti said she was not responsible for an advertise- ment recently published in the Queens County Medical Society Bulletin which said the Health De- partment was "particularly an- xious to get qualified black or Puerto Rican staff" for listed "top management" positions. Dr. Lowell Bellin, first deputy health commissioner, told the JTA that of six assistant commission- ers in the health department, all are Jewish. Dr. Benin, who is Jewish, said the ad was not prepared by the health department but was ap- parently worded by someone at the M F.ciety on the basis of Mcr.aughlin's earlier letter. Dr. Bellin assailed the ADL for riding on phony issues." NEW YORK—The constitutional- ity of laws that permit Jewish rit- ual slaughter of livestock *as chal- lenged in a suit filed in federal court here Monday. The suit was filed by Henry Mark Holzer, a New York lawyer who. described himself as an athe- ist of Jewish origin. Holzer's suit seeks the con- vening of a special three-judge court to declare that it is uncon- stitutional for federal laws to ex- empt ritual slaughter from the general requirements for humane slaughter. He contends that such exemp- tions are a violation of the separa- tion of church and state "because they provide separate treatment and special protection to the diet- ary preferences of a particular oiliness is a Swedish sunset— there for all, but most of us .)k the other way and lose it. —Mark Twain The lawsuit also challenges the constitutionality of New York state laws concerning the identification and regulation of kosher meat Products.
