Tourists Saved in Downpour

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israeli police
rescued six American tourists
Tuesday from flash floods in the
usually parched Negev region
south of the Dead Sea.
A family of five named Levin
was pulled to safety when their

300 Black Hebrews
Face Deportation

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Some 300
black Hebrews living in Dimona
soon will receive deportation or-
ders from the interior ministry.
Ministry sources confirmed plans
to deport" tile Blacks whose tem-
porary residents visas have ex-
pired.
The JTA questioned interior
ministry sources about the de-
portation plans after Yehuda Yef-
fet, secretary of the local Hista-
drat branch in Dimona, told re-
porters that the Blacks were
becoming a serious nuisance in
Dimona.
Yeffet claimed that during the
past few weeks they repeatedly
took food from the local super-
markets and refused to pay.
He said the police were informed
and that he was subsequently as-
sured by the interior minister that
the Blacks have been ordered to
leave the country and would be de-
ported if they refused to leave on
their own.

car was washed away by flood

before.
An American, identified as Rich-
ard Jenks, was rescued by heli-
copter and taken to Hadassah Hos-
pital in Jerusalem after he was
found exhausted at the water's
edge near Nahal Yeelim in the
Sodom area. Police said that Jenks
was nearly drowned when he tried
to ride his scooter through what
he thought was shallow water.
The floods were caused by -tor-
rential rains that have swept Is-
rael in recent days, including the
Negev which rarely gets much
rainfall. Several roads in the re-
gion have been closed.
Meanwhile, northern Israel was
blanketed by a 24-hour snowfall
that covered the Galilean moun-
tains and sent ski enthusiasts to
the slopes of Mt. Hermon.
Tel Aviv was lashed by a hail
storm which damaged crops in the
area. Israeli farmers welcomed
the rain but are now impatient for
sunny days so that they can start
their winter planting.

UNITED NATIONS (ZINS) —
Some political observers here be-
lieve that the inability of the Unit-
ed Nations to cope with the India-
Pakistan War will have a direct
bearing on its role in the current
Israel-Arab impasse.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Dr.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who had al-
ways voted against Israel, intro-
duced resolutions condemning "Is-
rael aggression" and consistently
demanded that Israel abide by the
decisions of the UN, has done a
complete about-face on the world
organization.
It is reported that, in a conver-
sation with Israel Foreign Minis-
ter Abba Eban, the Pakistan dip-
lomat declared that "the resolu-

tions of the UN aren't worth the
paper on which they are written,"
and asserted that "one must be
strong because the only language
the world understands is the lan-
guage of power."
Some days later, when the UN
General Assembly adopted its
resolution calling on Israel to with-
draw from the occupied territories,
Eban said that that resolution has
about as much value as the other
resolutions adopted by the polit-
ically bankrupt UN.
