Senator Hart Says Jackson Amendment
Offered in 'Haste', Explains His Vote

In his reply to the editor of The
Jewish News who inquired about
his negative vote on the Jackson
Amendment -to the defense appro-
priation bill, U. S. Senator Philip
A. Hart this week submitted an
explanatory statement in which he
maintains that the amendment was
submitted in haste and that the
sums needed for Israel's protec-
tion already was available.

"At any rate, it seemed to me
that more than enough funds were
available to meet Israel's present
defense needs. Further, I am con-
fident that if additional money
were needed, it would be made
available promptly, with my strong
support.
