Militancy of Jewish Students Abating,
Vote on Merger
Hillel Foundation Directors Claim

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

GROSSINGERS, N.Y. (JTA) —
The overt militancy of the Jew-
ish student, demonstrated in re-
cent years by his politically-minded
and anti-establishment protests,
has disappeared from the campus.
Instead, he has become passive
toward social and political issues,
directors of the Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation reported Tuesday at
their annual conference here.
The 103 Hillel directors, who
staff 90 major colleges and univer-
sities, presented a consensus view
of a Jewish campus generation still
disenchanted with the "plastic
character" of the organized Jewish
community, including the syna-
gogue, but no longer stirred into
volatile prntests over such issues
as war, racism or the Draft.
"These fires have been stoked"
said Rabbi Norman Frimer, con-
ference chairman and Hillel coor-
dinator for metropolitan New

York. "If they still give off some

heat, they don't generate any
incandescent flame."
Many of Rabbi Frimer's col-
leagues agreed with his view that
students are turning inward among
themselves seeking personal salva-
tion.
This has manifested itself in a
variety of student-stimulated forms
of religious and ethnic identity
such as the continuing spread of
student-conceived, but Hillel-direct-
ed , free Jewish universities; an
awakened interest in Yiddish begun
by Hillel four years ago; the grow-
ing number of Jewish fellowship
groups or campus, and the bur-
geoning Jewish-oriented life-style
of small groups of students.

ness" will vote on uniting their

tion_ branches and members of
Poale Zion, the United Labor
Zionist Organization of America
and the American Habonim Asso-
ciation will vote on joining the
3 groups into a single unit. Each
organization will vote separately.
If approved, the united organiza-
tion will have a membership of
over 60,000.
