Mrs. Merle Harris, vice-chairman of the women's division of
the 1972 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund, presents
a check for 9500,000 froin Detroit contributors to Dr. Sidney Edel-
stein, New York, national cash mobilization chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, at the UJA national conference, as part of Detroit's
response to the call for immediate cash for Israel. The cash mobili-
zation committee here, headed by Louis Berry, urges those who have
not paid their past year's pledges to do so before the end of the year.
"There is a tremendous need for cash in Israel and at the same
time payment of pledges before the end of the year make it possible
to take the tax deduction in 1971," Berry said.
