Bradlin Memorial Concert Jan. 23

Hour after hour, the small boy
practiced the piano at the Ekaterin-
skov Imperial Conservatory in Rus
sia. He was one of five children of
an upper middle class Jewish fam-
ily. At the same conservatory was
pregor Piatigorsky, the great cell
ist, and the famous composer Pro-
kofieff was born in the young
pianist's home town of Dnepropet-
rovsk. Music became life to young

ious youth went to Riga in the .
Ukraine where his constant coin-.
panions were artists and nobility.
He was at home everywhere. From
Riga, he traveled to Paris where
again he surrounded himself with
those in the musical arts.
Harry Bradlin believed in democ-
racy as much as he believed in
music, and he yearned to escape
communism.
The year was 1921. The 19-year-
old pianist arrived in America on
the same boat as famed ballerina
Anna Pavlova.
His stay in New York was brief,
for in his possession was a letter
introducing him to Ossip Gabrilo-
witsch, then conductor of the De-
troit Symphony Orchestra. He came
to Detroit where relatives awaited
him.
