U.S. Jewry Admonished to. Channel Gifts for Soviet Jewry Through UJA

The following
statement has
been prepared by the Committee
on Control and Authorization of
Campaigns in response to numer-
ous inquiries in connection with
activities on behalf of Soviet Jewry.
The statement, released by Mrs.
Charlotte Jacobson and Jack
Weiler, co-chairmen of the Com-
mittee on Control and Authoriza-
tion of Campaings, states:

"The plight of Soviet Jewry, in
their relentless and heroic fight
to secure their rights of emigra-
tion to Israel and to recreate their
spiritual, religious and cultural life
as a Jewish community in Russia,
has gripped the imagination of
American Jewry and of men of
good will everywhere.
"Indeed, the outpouring of sym-
pathy and understanding has been
commensurate with the outstand-
ing heroism and courage of large
numbers of Soviet Jews in the
struggle for their human rights.
Many American Jewish organ-
izations are engaged In public re-
lations and educational activities,
designed to support the struggle
of Soviet Jews, which are coordi-
nated through the leadership of
the American Jewish Conference
on Soviet Jewry. These efforts
should be- encouraged and support-

ed by the American Jewish com-
munity.
"It should be noted that the
needs of Soviet Jewry in their ef-
forts to leave Russia, and in trans-
it to Israel and other countries,
are being provided for by the
agencies supported by the Jewish
Welfare Funds-United Jewish Ap-

peal campaigns. Their needs on, ar-
rival in Israel and elsewhere like-
wise are provided for by the same
campaigns. The considerable sums
which are required can be mobil-
ized only by the United Jewish
Appeal as the central, human-
itarian 'agency of American Jewry
for oversea sneeds. UJA agen-
cies spare no effort in bringing
relief and facilities for rescue of
Soviet Jews who are able to leave
the Soviet Union, and for their
absorption in Israel and elsewhere.
"In order to assist Soviet Jewry,
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Police are all Jews should channel their aid
investigating a letter received by through the UJA."

Premier Golda Meir which warned:
"If you don't outlaw autopsies by

The letter, apprently from reli-
gious zealots opposed to autopsies,
was the first threat against a
leading public official. Hitherto,
zealots have been harassing path-
ologists who perform postmortems
at government and public hospitals.

NEW YEARS EVE?

The letter was signed by "mem-
bers of the Bnei Brak and Jeru-
salem Zealots Association."

(More more than 1,000 young
Orthodox activists picketed the
New York Hilton Hotel Dec. 15,
where 2,500 new lifetime mem-
bers of Hadassah were being hon-
ored. The pickets, members of the
national Orthodox youth movement
Zeirei Agudath Israel of America,
were protesting against autopsies
in the Hadassah Hospital.

(Zeirei Agudath Israel announced
that it would continue its cam-
paign. on this issue, until the
Hadassah Hospital publicly pledges
itself to adopt a policy of not per-
forming any autopsy without the
informed consent of the next of
kin.)

Call Evaakess WW1 ti

mittee, supplementing the state ,
ment from the national committee,
urged clearance on appeals with
the local group and expressed the
hope that there will be fullest co-
operation here in assuring UJA's
role as the chief coordinator of
relief for Soviet Jews.)

Elect Dependable American Delegates to the Zionist Congress

Vote ZOA Slate No. 1

Your Ballot Is Secret Vote Your Own Convictions

• American Zionists, men and women throughout America, can be proud
of the ZOA slate, comprising the most distinguished Zionist leaders
in the country.

• Do not allow your ballot to identify you with the utterly baseless at-
tacks against the ZOA by Hadassah officials in New York. ZOA stands
on its 75 years of unswerving fidelity to the Zionist idea.

LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!

• In an obvious attempt to elect opponents of ZOA through the Hadassah

ballot, men who otherwise would have no chance of'election, Hadas-
sah officials made a deal under the caption "Non-Party Zionists" with
Bnai Zion, a fraternal order, and the "League," a miniscule splinter
of dissenters.

• Hadassah officials now seek political capital under the slogan, "We

are non political." Indeed! The fact Is that Hadassah officials are up
to their necks in Zionist politics both here and abroad, in effect tying
Hadassah as a tail to the political kite of the socialist Labor Zionist
Party.

-

• Hadassah officials proclaim the virtue of .pon party Zionism, based

-

on the fact that Hadassah heads up the only international Zionist
confederation which excludes Israeli Zionists. This contradicts the
fundamental principles of "the unity of the Jewish people and the

centrality of Israel in Jewish life" — embraced in the Jerusalem Pro-
gram, the basic charter of the World Zionist Organization to which
Hadassah ostensibly subscribes. The fact is that Israeli Zionists of
all persuasions have always belonged, and continue to belong; to the
world Zionist movement. They are fully entitled to participate and
do participate in Zionist Congresses and in the governing bodies of
the World Zionist Organization. When Hadassah officials boast that
their grouping is "composed of Diaspora Zionists only," they are
admitting to a dangerous Isolationism which, If unchecked, win drive
a wedge between Israelis and the rest of world Jewry.

• Another deal: On the appeal of the ZOA, the Congress Tribunal in
Jerusalem found, that Hadassah, the Labor Zionists and Mizrachi, by_
inter-party agreement,
. . arrogated to -themselves the right to,-
divide those mandates [69idelegates1 according to their own for-
mula." The Congress Tritninai in- its Judgment said:""Sapfrait agi1S
meet must perforce be raided, and it. Is not to be lonowedlor the'
purpose of allocating the mandates In the United States?' Thus, the
ZOA's appeal on moral grounds and Zionist principles was upheld.

• Understandably, Hadassah is ashamed of all this. But why hide the
truth? Why does Hadassah distort the truth beyond recognition?

• These shenanigans deserve to be repudiated by Hadassah members
around the country who, on a year-round basis, function in splendid
harmony and cooperation with the ZOA.

We urge the entire Zionist constituency to vote ZOA Slate No.1. Your vote on the
merits will enhance the American Zionist movement "andpave the way for a
meaningful 20flth World Zionist Congress.

TO BE COUNTED: Your mail ballot must be postmarked not Mier than Dm:ember 211.
