and in the types of American Jew-
ish leadership are foreseen as de-
veloping from the impact on hun-
dreds of Jewish collegians of
studying formal Judaism courses
in universities,, rather than in Jew-
ish schools.
The forecast was made by Dr.
Jacob Neusner, professor of Jew-
ish studies at Brown University,
who noted that "every field of
Judaic learning may be found in
some university." He added that
"while the professors remain pri-
marily of Jewish origin, they teach
students of every ethnic and reli-
gious background."
He presented his views on the
tremendous growth in the um-
ber of such courses under uni-
versity auspices and the possible
impacts of such development in
a recent Issue of the Journal of
the Central Conference of Amer-
ican Rabbis.
One result of the university ap-
proach to the study of Judaism, he
reported, was the development of
"a new kind of young Jewish intel-
lectual, one who treats Judaics
in the same respectful but critical
way as American history or Eng-
lish literature or any other aspect
of the humanities."
As more and more such Jewish
studies take their place in the
adult community, "a much higher
level of intellectuality than charac
terizes the present generation" of
the American Jewish community

is likely. He predicted that the IQ
of American Jewish life was
"likely to rise considerably." That
development, •in turn, be said,
"will pose problems for rabbis
who are used to being the only
Jews in town who read Jewish
books and think Jewish thoughts."

400 Workers Strike
at 18 NY Centers, Ys

NEW YORK (JTA)—The ap-
proximately 400 group-work per-
sonnel of the Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies of New York went
on strike Monday because, as a
spokesman put it, "management
has made no move to date to come
forward with anything."
The group workers have been
seeking salary increases compar-
able to those granted last spring
to federation's case workers, up
to $300 a year.
Erik Strong, speaking for Local
1707, Community and Social
Agency Employes Union, said the
walkout affects 18 community cen-
ters and 15M-YWHAs in the five
boroughs and Westchester. Resi-
dents of the Ys will not be af-
fected, he said, except that "as
far as we know" they will not be
getting heat and other services,
since the custodial staffs are
among the strikers
