Why is there no scroll read de-

of Hannka, Just like the Book of
Esther which is read daring
Purim?
Basically, the answer to this
question is that while the Book of
Esther is an official book of the
Jewish Canon, there is no Canoni-
cal Book (a book of sacred Scrip-
ture) that contains the story of
Hanuka. The Book of Maccabees,
which does contain the story, is
an extra-canonical book, i.e. a part
of the Apocrypha. It is interesting
to note that during the Middle
Ages some synagogues were known
to have used the book of Macca-
bees. Yemenite Jews still read this
book. Some of our prayers contain
this book.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Devout
Moslems on the West Bank, Gaza
Strip and East Jerusalem are pre-
paring for the annual "Haj" —
pilgrimage to -Mecca—which be-
gins in less than two months.
Chances appeared dim that Mos-
lems from Israel will be permitted
for the first time to make the trip
to the holy city in Saudi. Arabia.
Saudi= monarch, King Faisal,
twice has refused to allow Mos-
lems from Israel to enter his ter-
ritory.
Moslems in the occupied ter-
ritories have begun to file requests
for travel permits. Permits are
valid for 40 days which covers the
length of the pilgrimage and re-
turn. The pilgrims will travel in
specially licensed buses through
Jordan, where they will join other
convoys_ heading south toward
__Saudi Arabia.
