Zionist Federation
Cites Smolar, Gorkin

NEW YORK —The significance
of continued protest against the
USSR limitation of Jews allowed
to emigrate and the importance
of the kibutz were highlighted at
a luncheon honoring two authors
by the American Zionist Federa-
tion.
Honored were Boris Smolar,
editor emeritus of the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, author of
"Soviet Jewry: Today and To-
morrow" (Macmillan) and Michael
Gorkin, author of "Border Kibutz"
(Grosset and Dunlap). Rabbi Is-
rael Miller, president of the Amer-
ican Zionist Federation, presided.
Similar expressed the belief
that the Soviet government is
"worried" over the growing pro-
tests abroad against areiggating
its Jewish population to a status
of second-class citizenship and
that "little by little the Krem.
official line on Jews bends
under pressure from the civi-
lized world."
The 29-year-old Gorkin, who at
one time had New Left pro-
Arab sympathies, said the kibutz
"has a unique frontier life-style,
that makes you aware of your
Jewishness. And the border kibutz,
with the intense devotion of its
members, is an integral part of
Israel's first line of defense. The
kibutznicks have a devotion to
their land, and their way of life,
which gives them a complete dedi-
cation to their country."
