Michigan Cancer Foundation Helps Israel Develop Educatio n Program

Through the efforts of Leonard
N. Simons, the Mich ig an Cancer
Foundation has been working with
the Israel Cancer Association since
1969 in developing a public in-
formation prograin in Israel.
Simons is a member of the board
of Michigan Cancer Foundation,
and is a former chairman of the
board.
In the last decade the average
life span in Israel has risen to a
rate comparable to that in the
most advanced countries in the
world. The average age for women
in Israel is 72.5 years and for
men, 71 years.

"This expanded life span has
greatly intensified the problem
of cancer, a disease predomin-
ately affecting elder age groups,"
Simons explains.

The- public _education depart-
ment, under the direction of Ray
Krawczak, located in the Meyer
L. Prentis Cancer Center of the

Michigan Cancer Foundation, has
developed an anti-smoking program
designed to help people quit smok-
ing which has been sent to Direc-
tor General Dov Ben4feir at the
Association Israelienne Center Le
Cancer in Tel Aviv.
The program is called "The
Smoker's Survival Clinic" and it
utilizes a Synanon or Alcoholics
Anonymous concept: people gather
together in a group with direction
from a trained lay person and
help one another quit smoking.
The Smoker's Survival Clinic is
a completely structured program
which trains a lay person to pres-
ent the program without the as-
sistance of a physician. It is a
complete and total package in-
cluding four films with accom-
panying meeting guides; slides and
other anti-smoking visuals; and re-
lated handout, materials which in-
clude a progranied Instruction
booklet on how to quit smoking

and a Smoker's Self-Testing Kit.
The program also developed
scripts that can be adapted by
guest dieticians, physical education
specialists, oral surgeons and den-
tists for group presentations.

Other films sent to Israel from
the Michigan Cancer Foundation
include "Cancer Facts and Fic
don," "Toward Cancer Control
for Women," "Toward Cancer
Control for Men" and "Living
After Cancer."

Detection is the central theme
of "Cancer Facts and Fiction."
The Michigan Cancer Foundation
film brings the viewer up to date
on cancer treatment and advances,
and gives him a step-by-step can-
cer detection and prevention pro-
gram.
The Michigan Cancer Foundation
provides the 4,200,000 people of
the four Detroit metropolitan coun-
ties a unified service of cancer
prevention and detection, direct as-
sistance in the home-care and re-
habilitation of cancer patients, and
research, development and t ech-
nical training for earlier cancer
diagnosis and better cancer treat-
ment.
The foundation, the UF's only
cancer control agency, is a product
of a long period of growth and
evolution in cancer control efforts.
