THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS War Survivor Records Experiences in Documentary Novel on Partisans By CHARLOTTE DUBIN Twenty-five years ago, as he lay recuperating from war wounds in a Russian hospital, young Hy- man Shenkman dreamed that he would see his brother once again. He never did—the Nazis saw to that—but Shenkman has brought his imaginings to life in a book, "Partisans Against the Nazi War Machine," published by Jonathan David (68-22 Eliot, Middle Vil- lage, NY 11379). The Livonia businessman calls his work a docu- mentary novel — part fact, part fiction, part re- collection of his. own - experiences. As it occurred in reality, the two Shenkman brothers in the book are separat- ed by war; as in Shenkman's long- ago dream, they are brought to- gether again after the war. The 192-page novel follows the two men in their individual roles of resistance, one serving in the Russian army, the other with the partisans. Li k e the hero David, 21-year- old Shenkman was aboard the last train into Russia before the Nazis took over his home- land in 1941. A native of Vilna —"the Jerusalem of Lithuania" —Shenkman lost his parents, as well as his brother, to the war. But be was reunited with a sis- ter who now livRs in Israel. With the help of an aunt, Sarah Sonar, he came to the United States and Detroit in May 1949. He married here and has a 17- year-old son. Shenkman, who lives on Alta Vista Rd., Southfield, credits his wife Seats with providing the "moral help" in his writing, which took more than a year. Why did he write it? "The idea came to me in the late 1960s. At the time, great public figures came to speak at Michigan State Univer- sity, yet (American Nazi leader) George Rockwell got an audience four times as large. When I heard some students applaud him, I de- cided to do something about it." Shenkman founded the short- lived Anti-Nazi League — short- lived partly because the reason for its founding, George Rockwell, was shot and killed by a disgrunt- led disciple, and the Nazi Party fell apart. But the league also fell apart because two "factions emerged— those - who believed neo-Nazitm could be fought only by legal means and those who felt other- wise. Shenkman describes himself as a dove on the issue, yet he in- sists that extremists must be sup- pressed in the interests of demo- structure in the system for Congress elections." The ZOA protested what it calls a "secret inter-party agreement" on the distribution of nothing to prevent parties from making agreements among themselves without participation of all parties." The Tribunal requested that there be a redistribution of the 45%. A new distribution has the organizations in the .American Zionist Federation. been agreed on by more than 80% of that "fr.om now on the appellants refrain from requests FINALLY -- The Congress Tribunal making public accusations liable to harm the entire Zionist Movement." The ZOA has broken 'this injunction of the Tribunal. 'MAIL YOUR VOTE FOR SLATE #5 PPS ww._ ,irearega. '3 LATER THAN DECEMBER 28th SOL The cracy "by legal means—if pos- sible." Shenkman, who himself was saved by Russian farmers, staunchly defends his literary portrayal of the Russians in fa- vorable terms. "Don't forget this was written about a time when the Russians were the only ones who stood up to the enemy." He maintains that there was little anti-Semitism in the Rus- sian army, but concedes there were few Jews "and anyway we were fighting a common enemy." Despite evidence that partisans in Poland and other East Europe- an nations were intensely anti- Semitic. Shenkman insists, based on his own experience, that most Poles were friends of the Jews. "I looked up to the partisans. They were my hero figures. For every medal an army man received, a partisan deserved three." Shenkman answers criticism with "I wrote it as I saw it." Writing this book did not re- quire dredging up 20-year-old memories, for "these memories are engraved on my heart," said Shenkman. "It is worse to try and wash them out. Those who do try become frustrated." Shenkman said his book is being sold in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal— proof, he feels, that the reading Public still wants books about the Holocaust. "I just wish there were more books for children that wouldn't turn them off," be said. 'If we teach our children ancient history, why can't we teach them what happened to their parents? My son is well read on the subject. try to emphasize to him the resis- tance by the Jewish people I think it has brought him closer to me. "When I was president of the Anti-Nazi League, I once got a phone call threatening my life," said Shenkman. "My son, who was 14, told me, 'If anything happens to you, I'll take over.' It was the ptoudest moment in my life." 3,500 Terrorists in Jail JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Of ap- proximately 5,100 prisoners in Is- raeli jails, 3,500 are Arabs sen- tenced for terrorist acts, it was re- ported by Minister of Police Shiomo Hillel.
