A prominent Cleveland lawyer, Ginsberg has also been a tower of strength in the Cleveland Jewish Federation. He is succeeding Louis Broido, who led the JDC successfully and with great dignity during the last few years as its chairman, and who has been active in the JDC for decades. Mr. Broido will remain in the ranks of JDC leadership and will continue to contribute a good deal of his time to JDC interests. • • • JDC IN MOTION: The person who keeps the JDC in motion is its Sometimes on Sundays you'd like to do a little shopping. executive vice-chairman Samuel L. But the JDC is known for its ability to meet emergencies ever since World War I. It had its "good years" and its "bad years." The good years were when Jew, throughout the world were not so much in need of aid from American Jewry. The bad years were when Jews in various countries have found themselves in catastrophic situations and were greatly dependent on JDC relief. During the years of World War I. the JDC raised an average of $4,000,000 a year. Its income jumped to $13,000,000 when the war was over and Polish Jewry found itself in unprecedented need of relief. It dropped to as low as $579,000 in 1924, and even much lower in 1925, when the situation of the Jews overseas became more relaxed. But when World War II broke out in 1939, the contributions to JDC again rose to millions of dollars. And in the years immediately after World War II—when it was necessary to rebuild the Jewish life devastated by the Nazis in European countries and to help the Jews liberated from Nazi camps find their way to Palestine—the JDC income rose to about $80,000,000 in 1948 and reached $72,000,000 in 1948. Today, the JDC receives as its share from the UJA an average of $24,000 a year. The JDC has a national council composed of about 10,000 Jewish communal leaders from all over the country. Jack D.
