THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

NEW YORK—From 226 universi-
ties and colleges in 35 - States in
the United States and Canada, 1,482
Jewish college - profesSois have
signed an affirmation of their
identification with "Zionism as a
movement of Jewish liberation and
cultural renascence."

These American-Jewish acade-
micians aligned themselves with
the Zionist movement in response
to an invitation from Milton R.
Konvitz, professor of industrial and
labor relations and professor of law
at Cornell University, who is hear-
ing an ad hoc committee of pro-
fessors seeking to strengthen Jew-
ish consciousness among the Jew-
ish college professors in this coun-
try.
The professors affirmed that "the
time has come to condemn forth-
rightly efforts to discredit the Jew-
ish people and the State of Israel

through blatant anti-Zionist propa-
ganda."

The one-paragraph affirmation
and endorsement of Zionism signed
by the 1,482 professors reads:
"We. endorse Zionism as a
movement of Jewish liberation
and cultural renascence, and we
affirm our identity with the Zion-
ist movement. We repudiate at-
tacks upon Zionism which at-
tempt to separate it &Om. authen-
tic Jewishness, and we regard
many of the attacks as manifes-
tations of anti-Semitism. We ac-
cept the Zionist aims of develop-
ing the unity of the Jewish peo-
ple, the centrality of Israel, and
the protection of Jewish rights
everywhere. We seek to strength-
en the State of Israel as the em-
bodiment of the prophetic vision
of justice and peace, and to en-
courage its efforts for the in-

ZOA Participates in Mail Election;
Listed as Slate No.1 ; Claims Gains

.

NEW YORK (ZINS) — Despite
misgivings about the system of
elections, the Zionist Organization
of America decided, on the basis of
the judgment of the Zionist Con-
gress Tribunal, to participate in
the forthcoming elections of dele-
gates to the 28th Zionist Congress.
ZOA will be listed first on the bal-
lot as Slate No. 1.
Balloting will be by mail for the
election of 55 per cent of the Amer-
ican delegates (83 delegates). The
other 45 per cent will be divided
among the Zionist groups in pro-
portion to their membership
strength.
The American Arbitration As-
s sociation, which will conduct the
election pursuant to contract with
the Area Election Committee of
the American Zionist Federation,
will mail ballots to all registered
Zionists between today and Mon-
day. The ballots must be return-
ed to the American Arbitration
Association in envelopes post-
marked no later than Dec. 28.
ZOA members, their wives and
children over 18, provided the
latter are ZOA members, will
each receive individual ballots.

Voting is not for individuals but
for the slate as a whole.
Voters belonging to more than
one Zionist organization will re-
ceive more than one ballot. How-
ever, regardless of how many bal-
lots a ZOA member receives, he
can vote only once. If a voter re-
turns more than one ballot or en-
velope, none will be counted.
In a communication to ZOA
leaders and members throughout
the country, Herman L. Weisman,
president of the ZOA, issued a call
to mobilize a massive ZOA vote.
ZOA election plaform was enclosed
with Weisman's communication.
Election platforms were issued by
the other Zionist parties.
"Despite premature, distorted,
and Partisan reporting on the de-
cision of the World Zionist Con-
gress Tribunal which acted on
ZOA's appeal against the election
method adopted by the American
Zionist Federation, the ZOA won
all 'the important points of the
appeal," it was stated here by
Weisman.

"Significantly," Weisman said,
"the question of principle, the
moral issue which ZOA raised, was
upheld completely. The tribunal
threw out the illicit agreement
reached by Hadassah, Mizrachi
and the Labor Zionists. The de-
cision went further: it directed the
Area Elections Committee of the
American Zionist Federation to
cure baSic defects in the election
rules. In this context elections will
proceed in the United States."
"We have gone as far as we
practically can to democratize the
rules of election besides eliminat-
ing the secret agreement," Weis-
man concluded.

gathering of Jewish people who
seek to settle there. This Zion-
ist affirmation incorporates our
desire to preserve the identity
of the Jewish people, which, we
believe, is served by Jewish edu-
cation and the fostering of spir-
itual and cultural values."

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Louis A. Pin-
cus, chairman of the Jewish
Agency, said that immigration this
year will be 12 per cent higher
than last and emphasized that
about 10,000 settlers are expected
from North America.
He noted that immigration has
fallen off from several European
countries, particularly France, and
attributed the drop to what he
called exaggerated reports of so-
cial haidships in Israel and the
wide publicity to charges by the
Black Panthers that poor Jews of
oriental origin suffered discrimina-
tion in Israel.
Addressing a press conference
here, Pincus termed the World
Zionist Movement's membership
campaign a "great success." He
said nearly 900,000 persons en-
rolled all over the world.
Pincus said that elections to the
next World Zionist Congress have
been completed in 19 countries and
remain to be held in six, including
the U.S.. Britain, France and New
Zealand.
Labor Zionist Platform
Calls for Democracy in
Jewish Communal Life -
NEW YORK (JTA)—Declaring
that it seeks the maximum in-
volvement of American Jews in the
determination of Jewish programs
and priorities in the U.S. and to
"liberate the Jewish community
from the domination of the few
who have not been chosen to lead
American Jewry, on which deci-
sions are undemocratically im-
posed," the Labor Zionist move-
ment - has issued its platform for
the forthcoming World Zionist Con-
gress elections.
The platform listed three areas
and issues that the "Labor Zionist
Movement regards as crucial for
dynamic and creative Jewish sur-
vival in the U.S.: support for
Labor Israel; democracy in Jewish
communal affairs; the unity of the
Jewish people; education and cub
ture; and protection of Jewish
rights."
