Jewish 'Santa' Throws
Party for Handicaped

Children with muscular dystro-
phy will be the guests of Mrs. Ira
G. Kaufman, wife of the Probate
Court Judge, at an afternoon
Christmas party Dec. 18 at the
Detroit Hilton Hotel. This marks
the 14th consecutive year that Mrs.
Kaufman has hosted such a party.
Mrs. Kaufman expects 289
wheelchair youngsters, ranging in
age from 6 to 17. The Marines are
donating 600 toys to add to the
holiday happiness.
This is the first year that the
event will be held in the Hilton.
In the past, the party has been
held at the Masonic Temple, Vet-
erans Memorial building, and other
locations around the city. Thanks
to its new manager, William Utnik,
the ballroom of the Hilton will be
available free to allow the purchas-
ing of more toys.
Twelve police from the Detroit
Police Department will be on
hand to aid the youngsters. Also,
Police Commissioner John Nich-
ols and Judge Kaufman will par-
ticipate in the program. Girl
scouts from Atlas Shalom syna-
gogue, under the leadership of
Mrs. Simon Krasner, will lend
assistance, as will members of
the Detroit Institute of Tech-
nology basketball team.
