how better service to patients and
grater economy -might result by
combining specialized functions
such as X-ray, laboratory and
other departments. That patients
can gain in both cost savings and
broadened services already hai
been demonstrated.by the success
of a centralized children's care
unit sponsored by Sinai and two
other institutions, according to
Thomas R. O'Donovan, chairman
of the steering committee under
which the task forces are working
and administrator of Mt. Carmel
Mercy Hospital and Medical Cen-
ter.
Other hospitals participating in
the "Northwest Detroit Hospitals
Quadrangle" discussions are Grace
Northwest, Providence and William
Beaumont.
At a recent dinner meeting at
Raleigh House, some 80 medical
and administrative leaders of the
five institutions heard of the suc-
cess of the children's unit at Mt.
Carmel, which also serves young
patients referred from Sinai and
Providence hospitals.
With Dr. Julian Priver, executive
vice president of Sinai Hospital,
presiding, the Northwest Quadran-
gle dinner program featured re-
marks by the chiefs of the medical
staffs, including Dr. Hyman S:
Mellen of Sinai.
In addition to shared medical
services, combined administrative
functions such as those in purchas-
ing, personnel management, data
processing and printing are under
consideration.
