On two occasions one month apart,
Fairfax County's only synagogue,
Temple Rodef Shalom, which is
located near here, was ripped with
gunfire during the early morning
hours. No one was in the $500,000
structure either time, but damage
to the temple was estimated at
over $3,000.
The first incident occurred on
the occasion of the synagogue's
first anniversary, Oct. 25. Nine
.22-caliber slugs shattered two
main plate-glass windows. On
Thanksgiving Day, shotgun blasts
ripped through the temple.
There . was no indication as to
the motive behind the shootings,
but Fairfax police said they might
have been connected with other
acts of vandalism that have oc-
curred at six area churches and
throughout the area since January.
The shootings at the temple were
reported by nearby residents.

German-Youth
Out to FirelPublie
on Syrian Jewry

BONN (JTA)—Jewish youth or-
ganizations here have opened a
campaign to arouse public opinion
to the plight of Jews in Syria and
to get the government to intervene
with •the Damascus regime on their

behalf.

The Jewish students organization
in Munich sent letters to President
Gustav Heinemann, Chancellor
Willy Brandt and other officials
declaring that the world must not
"keep silent" in face of what is
happening to Jews in Syria.
Jewish students in most West
German universities distributed
leaflets and letters of protest which
German students were asked to
sign and send to Syrian authori-
ties.
Jewish youth representatives met
with leaders of the Jewish-Christian
Society to discuss the possibility of
action by the society on behalf of
Syrian Jews.
Werner Nachman, president of
the Central Council of Jews in Ger-
many, said the youth organizations
had his full support in their cam-
paign.
