Peres to Present Award to Hamburgers Gifts Will Brighten Holiday for GIs Editor, The Jewish News: Hanuka is almost upon us. Many of our troops will leave Vietnam, but there are many who will re- main not only in Vietnam, but in other far-off parts of the world, isolated from Jewish community life. Most Jewish servicemen are small minorities at the bases where they are stationed. Hanuka cannot be celebrated unless we send gifts, decorations, menorat and refresh- ments symbolic of this holiday. Except in Vietnam, where toilet articles are needed, our servicemen are most appreciative when gifts are Jewish in nature. Gifts such as Jewish books, mezuzot, halla covers, candle- slicks, kidush cups and stars on chains. If you wish to send books of trading `stamps, please be sure they are full. Each book is equal to one gift . . . and each gift is equivalent to a smile and a greeting from home. Also greetings can be sent to servicemen at military bases in the U.S. as well as overseas, Viet- nam, Germany, Korea, etc. These messages are sent via radio through the Military Affiliate Radio Service (MARS). For information, contact the Bnai Brith Council office, 354-1600, or Sherman Goldman, co-chairman, community and veterans service, Bnai Brith Council, 557-9537. SHERMAN GOLDMAN Shimon Peres, minister of transportation and communications in the Israel cabinet, who has been at the center of Israel's defense endeavors for most of his adult life, will present the Israel Prime Minister's Medals to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hamburger at the third annual Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues Israel Bond Dinner, 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the Sheraton Cadillac Hotel. Co-sponsors of the dinner are Temples Emanu-El, Beth El, Israel, Beth Jacob and Kol Ami. The Hamburgers are active memoers of Temple Emanu-El. Harry Modell is dinner chairman. Associate chairmen are Maxwell Jospey and Leonard N. Simons. The Israel Bond office, 577-6770, is taking reservations for the din- ner. Participants on the program will represent all temples. A high- light will be the Hanuka lighting ceremony, with Cantor Harold Orbach leading in the singing, and Morton Wolin, lighting the candles. According to the New York Times, the project would be simi- lar to the rail, subway 'and ele- vated system built to connect three regions of San Francisco at a cost of $1,300,000,000. The Israelis believe they can hold the costs down to at least half the San Francisco figure. It is ex- pected to provide savings and other advantages for a country in which roads are now the only practical means of transport. In 1950, there were 9,000 pri-, vate cars in -Israel. Today there are more than 150,000, or one for every 20 citizens. By 1975 the fig- uer is expected to rise to 250,000. In addition there are 60,000 trucks, 10,000 buses and 6,000 taxis in Israel.
