_Iniffeetive Golda Praises Nixon, Rogers; Say$ NEW YORK (JTA) — Premier Golda Meir of Israel reportedly told a closed meeting of the Con- ference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations that the United States was not sequeezing Israel politically or economically and characterized the U.S. as the "friendliest country" toward Israel. Speaking to some 400 Jewish leaders who gave her a standing ovation when she entered the meet- ing•hall and applauded frequently during her extemporaneous 55- minutes address, Mrs. Meir praised both President Nixon and Secre- tary of State William P. Rogers for the "warmth" they had shown when she met with them last Thursday in Washington. Without specifically mentioning whether either official had made a commitment to sell Israel Phantom jets, Mrs. Meir noted that she had been told Israel has the best pilots and the best air force in the Mid- dle East. "Our pilots are good," she reportedly told the meeting "but we have no right to send them against Soviet pilots without being properly equipped. Even the best pilots need planes to fly." Despite her praise for Mr. Nixon and Rogers, Mrs. Meir neverthe- less appeared critical of the ad- ministration's virtual blockade of Phantom jets to Israel when she remarked that it "is dangerous when friends think they know better than we do" the real dan- gers facing Israel with the con- tinuing arming of Egypt by the USSR. The Israel premier sharply con- demned the United Nations for its inability to deal effectively with world tensions, threats of war and actual war, and noted that the conflagration now involving India and Pakistan was another indica- tion of what small nations can expect from the UN. She observed that the ineffectiveness of the UN back within one hour" to Jarring's Middle East peace mission, but "w ith out preconditions" from either Israel or its Arab neigh- bors."
