Resistance Fighter Will Address
Students on 20 U. S. Campuses
Rehovot Gets Grants to Research
Causes of Deafness, - Repro.dUCtion

($117,120) U.S. National institutes
.of Health grant for continued re-
search on ciliated mucosa — re-
search which may help to eliminate
certain types of deafness --- has
been received by Prof. Alexander
Silberberg of the Weizmann In-
stitute's polymer research depart-
ment, in association with Dr. Ya-
akov Sade, head of the department
of otolaryngology at Meir Hospi-
tal, and Prof, Nathan Sharon of
the institute's biophysics .depart-
ment.
The grant will aid research on
secretory otitis media, a children's
disease, which results in blockage
of the Eustathisin tubes and is a
frequent cause of chronic deafness.
An Il 3,800,000 ($900,000) grant
has been awarded by the Popula-
tion Council of New York to Dr.
Hans R. Lindner, professor of
physiology and head of the depart-
ment of biodynamics at the Weiz-
mann Institute, to provide support
for his research in reproductive
biology over a five-year period.
The grant will permit the con-
struction_ of new laboratory units
incorporating facilities for the de-
tailed study of sex hormones and
their actions, the culture and ob-
servation of eggs and other cells
outside the body, and for experi-
mental surgery. The new funds
also will permit the acquisition
of sophisticated equipment.
Prof. Lindner and his colleagues
are engaged in basic research in
the field of endocrinology and the
biology of mammalian reproduc-
tion. The work of his group is
based on an interdisciplinary ap-
proach, bringing together scien-
tists trained in medicine or veter-
inary science, physiology and cell
biology, biochemistry, molecular
biology, immunochemistry and elec-
tron-microscopy.

as chief education officer of the
Israeli defense forces on March 1,
to become chairman of the Yad
Vashem Holocaust and Heroes
Memorial Authority in Jerusalem.
is coming to the U.S. for a three-
week lecture tour that will signal
the inception of five months of
commemorative programs on the
Holocaust and resistance on U.S.
campuses.
Shirley Kalb, acting chairman
of the board of trustees of the
American Zionist Youth Founda-
tion, made the announcement.
A guest of the World Federation
of Underground Fighters and For-
mer Nazi Victims, Gen. Arad will
be addressing student assemblies,
classrooms, seminar and workshop
groups in 20 universities and col-
leges around the country, under
auspices of AZYF.
He was a resistance fighter in
Europe in his youth, a member of
Palmach in the War of Liberation,
and again a leader of troops in.the
liberation of Jerusalem in 1967.
Gen. Arad is pursuing studies on
the "Holocaust in Lithuania."
