William Makepeace Thackeray . uid of America's Most Versatile Musical-Comic-Singing Groups 0 S By BENJAMIN J. FRIEDMAN Associate Judge Guest Columnist Reflections on my recent trip to Israel: Just being there was a thrill, to see what these magnifi- cent people have created and achieved in so short a time. How- ever, certain things do stick out as special highlights ... Arriving in Jerusalem on Sabbath eve r:nd going immediately to the Western Wall—what a magnificent sight! The Hasidim dancing and singing to welcome the Sabbath. The per- sonal emotion involved in just see- ing "The Wall." Thousands of peo- ple praying and welcoming the Sabbath — nowhere in the world can one experience such a sense of belonging . . . Attending Sabbath services at the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv on Sabbath morning. The entire building is being reno- vated within and without. Can you imagine—a synagogue being com- pletely renovated! A trip to the city of Gaza, off limits to civilians, with an entertainment troupe sent there to entertain the troops. The young men and women stationed there were just great. I had dinner in the mess hall (chicken soup and gefilte fish were part of the meal) and spoke at length with them. I have never seen such de- votion to duty and country. Later, I met the commander of the Gaza area and when he learned my son, Jerry, was being Bar Mitzva this spring, he removed his insignias of rank, as well as the sword pin he wears, which is emblematic of his command status, and gave them to me as a Bar Mitzva gift for Jerry—one that he will , long cher- ish . . . I attended, as the guest of Prime Minister Golda Meir, a special benefit performance of the musical "Eesh Chosid Haya," which opened this past week in New York under the title "Only Fools Are Sad." Don't miss it—it is truly a delightful musical, based on Hasidic stories and songs and performed by six very talented and beautiful Israeli actors . . . I met two former students from Temple Emanu-El, who are now studying in Israel. Rick Sarason, son of Ken and Connie Sarason, is a rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College, in Jerusalem, and Nick Martin, son pf the Victor Martins, now attending ,Hebrew University and working for the Israel Foreign Office after -doing his tour of duty in the Israeli Army Lastly, the thrill of be ing able to order, eat. ..and enjoy a strictly kosher filet mignon - din- ner—only in Israel. I visited the Municipal Court in Tel Aviv to compare it with ours in Oak, Park. Judges and police- men are afforded the highest of respect and I was truly impressed by the level of competency and jus- tice as well as the protections af- forded to all defendants. I was approached by a young American who had appeared before me. here at home, and was in trouble in Tel Aviv. He asked for my assist- ance with his problem—however, I informed him that our jurisdic- tion didn't quite extended to Tel Aviv. He was surprised!
