Dr. Katsh Defends
Public Image of
Late Rabbi Levin

PHILADELPHIA — "In face of
the conditions a Jewish _ religious
leader has to face in the USSR—
an avowedly and officially atheistic
country—Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin
(chief rabbi of Moscow's Central
Synagogue, who died-Nov. 17) ful-
filled his task with dignity -and
devotion to the Jewish people
there." declared Dr. Abraham I.
Katsh, president of Dropsie Uni-
versity.
Dr. Katsh was a dose friend of
Rabbi Levin since 1956 when they
first met at the Yeshiva in Moscow
and before he became associated
with the synagogue.
Dr. Katsh said that the rabbi's
public statements did not reflect
his own personal feelings, and that
he was constantly under•.eat
pressures and handicaps placed
on him by the Soviet government.
Dr. Katsh visited with Rabbi
Levin during his six different
visits to the USSR during which
he was able -to acquire micro-
... films of Geniza material and
other Judaica treasures locked
in the government's libraries and
museums.
Dr. Katsh questions whether the
characterization of Rabbi Levin
as a foe of Zionism is a true one.
He recalls an incident when he
was the only lay leader invited to
attend the rabbi's birthday party
in 1969:
Although Hebrew is equated with
Zionism by the Russians, Dr.
-:: .Katsh saw- fit to'-speak only in
Hebrew. When the master of cere-
monies at the synagogue function
interrupted Dr. Katsh and chided
- him for using Hebrew, Rabbi Levin
