Hills, Queens, which has engendered h e a t e d argument following objections by middle-class whites who deny they are racially motivated. Meanwhile, at Grossinger, N.Y., the Anti-Defamation League came out unequivocally in favor of the project as a means of achieving integration. The ADL, in a statement by Lawrenle Peirez, chairman of the fact-finding committee, ex- pressed the ADL's "overwhelm- ing support" for the Forest , Mils project. Peirez charged that its -opponents "have been agitated out of all proportion into baseless fears that their neigh- borhoods -will be destroyed." .Dr. Abraham Joshua Ileschel, the theologian, told the ADL's 58th annual meeting that the hous- ing project "was mishandled by the city administration," which "showed a complete lack of under- standing and bungled the situa- tion." The educator added that while American Jewry must be active in the civil rights fight, it was not its responsibility to "take the lead." Most of. Forest Hills' pop- ulation is Jewish. Also, 16 - community organiza- tions of Queens and Long Island, led by Rabbi I. Usher Kirshblum, past president of the Queens Rab- binical Assembly, endorsed the housing project as "a moral issue" that should not be "decided by a majority or minority vote." .THE ,DETIOTE JEWISH MEWS 14—Friday, December 3, 1971 240 Jewish Graves Damaged in Lithuania LONDON (JTA)—Soviet Jewish sources reported that the Jewish cemetery in Kovno, the former capital and now the second-largest city in Lithuania, was desecrated Oct. 15 by six youths who destroy- ed 240 tombstones.
