Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd described as 'a tragedy" Israel's

Lithuanian-born Henry Hurwitz, editor of the Menorah Journal
for 46 years, died in New York at 75.
Bulgaria was asked to confirm if Chief Rabbi Asher Hannanel,

Gen. David Sarnoff was chosen Reform synagogue statesman of the

Lt. Gen. David Dragunsky, a highly decorated Soviet Jewish war
hero, said that while "vestiges of anti-Semitism still exist in the Soviet
Union," the government "is about to liquidate the last traces," Speaking
in fluent Yiddish at a Warsaw Ghetto exhibit in Paris, be stated that
"not more than 100 Jews of Russia, mainly old people living in the past,
would choose to emigrate if a referendum were held"; that "few (Soviet
Jews are interested in, reading Yiddish publications," and that "there is
no demand for Jewish schools."
Reuven Barkatt, Israeli ambassador to Norway, was appointed
secretary general of Mapai, succeeding Yosef Almogi, who became
minister-without-portfolio.
It was reported that the Soviet authorities had closed synagogues
in at least a dozen cities and removed five lay leaders from their
congregational posts. -
The late William D. Traitel of Detroit left $500,000 to Wayne State
U. for research in blood diseases, especially leukemia,
Israeli Justice Minister Dov Joseph disclosed that the USSR had
never acknowledged a request for relevant data on Adolf Eichmann.
President Kennedy said the State Department's Chester Bowles
would be his Mid East adviser,

attacks; 40 student organizations urged an anti-Jewish boycott.
The - National Democratic Party of Poland endorsed anti-Semitic
violence as justified in view of "the Jewish flood in Poland."
10 Years Ago- This Week: .1961
It was disclosed that more than 500,000 Jews had served in the
Russian army during World War II, and that 67,000-of them had won
medals for meritorious performance, bravery and heroism—including
50 winners of the highest citation, Hero of the Soviet-Union.
• Prof. Mordecai M. Kaplan, founder of the Jewish Reconstructionist
Foundation, was honored on his 80th birthday.
William Levy, 54, seer•ary general of the Algiers branch of the
French Socialist Party and ,, rominent in advocating. Moslem-European
- peace, was shot and killet rre'sumably by the 'French underground

NEW YORK—The creation of an
American Zalman Shazar Educa-
tors Award by the department of
education and cuture of the World
Zionist Organization was an-
nounced by Rabbi Emanuel Rack-
man, member of the executive of
the World Zionist Organization and
chairman of the department's ad-
visory committee.
The award is designed to "honor
Jewish educators in the Diaspora
for their contribution and service
to Jewish education," said Dr.
Hackman. It was named in honor
of President Shazar because of his
contribution to Jewish education
and having served earlier as Is-
rael's first minister of education
and culture and as the head of the
WZO department of education and
culture. •

Three educators and/or institu-
tions from three different coun-
tries will be selected for the
1971-72 year, one of-them from the
United States and Canada. Each
recipient will receive 3,006 Israeli
pounds ($720) to be presented -in
Israel, in the presence of Presi-
dent Shazar on 8 date close to his'
birthday.
Applications must be submitted-
