laying the groundwork far the
1972 campaign.
Dealing with American aware-
ness of the critical social welfare
needs of ,Israel, and with the on-
coming rampaign, Zuckernian said
he anticipated a -record-breaking
campaign. He said that advance
reports of solicitations for 1972
already show 219 pledges from 60
communities for a total of $25,740, -
300 — well -in 'excess of the „amounts
the same contributors gave in '1971.
Zuckerman told the partici-
pants in the session he ad-
dressed: "I ask only that we be
creative in formulating our cam-
paign plans, courageous in exe-
cuting them and cooperative
with 'other communities, with
UM and the Council of Federa-
tion in every-phew of our activ-
ity. in that way ,I am sure we
will succeed. We are rededirat-
Ing ourselves to the survival of
world Jewry—survival as a com-
munity in America, survival as

In his address, Zuckerman de-

the needs are to be accounted for,
American Jewry must raise $480,-
000,000 this-year in WA funds and
Israel Bond purchases.
He also pointed to the positive
factors in .1srael's eiperiences —
the economic' excellence, the elimi-
nation' of '- unemployment, the
growth in tourism. Be also pointed
to - growth in the country's gross
naotional product.
"Yet," be warned, "there IS a
gap, a dangerous gap, and we can
not postpone massive action to
deal with this tension even if the
shooting starts again."
Pincus said that . the 250,000 im-
poverished live on a poverty level
of $24 per month per person. ••

CJFWF leaders indicated at the

must raise a minimum of $550,-
000,000 to provide for local and na-
tional as_well as -overseas needs.

existing situation, contained in the
Herbert J. Abeles Lecture. he -de-'
livered at the assembly 'banquet—
he is the first non-American to
,have been invited to deliver an
Abele i Lecture—Pincus said that
