The announcement was made by
Chief -Judge Stanley H. Fuld,
chairman of the seminary's board
of directors.
Dr. Cohen, a noted historian, is
Jacob H. Schiff Professor of His-
tory at the seminary; a post which
he will- 'retain. He was ordained
by the seminary in 1948 and holds
its degrees of bachelor and master
of Hebrew- literature. Dr. Cohen
has a doctorate_ in Semitic lan-
guages irom Columbia University.
Before assuming his present
chair at the seminary2in 1970, he
was professor of history and direc-
tor of the- Center of Israel and
Jewish Studies at Columbia, where
he had taught full time since 1963,
and in various parttime capacities
since 1950. From 1950 to 1957 he
was librarian , at the seminary.
The board of directors also
announced its intention to take
the necessary steps to bring
about a revision of its bylaws
so as to change the title of the
office heretofore held by Dr.
. Finkelstein from chancellor to
president.
Judge Fuld explained that the
contemplated change in the by-
laws will make it possible to give
Dr. Cohen the 'title of president of
the seminary and president of the
faculties, thus enabling - the board
to revert -to seminary tradition,
in calling its chief executive offi-
cer 'president and. investing him
with executive authority.
