10 Years Ago This Week: 1961 -
David Zermati, president of an Algerian Jewish community, Dr.
Joseph Cohen, prominent physician, and Camille Levy were murdered
by terrorists opposing Algerian independence.
Israeli Ambassador Michael S. Comay said of new UN Secretary
General Thant: "Nothing could" have given us-greater satisfaction, than
to see this office being filled by a man -who is so highly esteemed, a
- man of impeccable integrity, moral courage -and high intelligence, with
these qualities graced by a deep humility and_ quiet wisdom. . ."
Israel was distressed at reports that Egypt bad deieloped a Nazi-
style V-2 rocket with the aid of a West German-scientist.
The Knesset, 68-7, agreed that the Palestinian refugees should
be resettled among the Arab states, not in Israel.
Gedalia - Rubinovich Pechersky, 60, former lay chairman of the
Leningrad Jewish Community, got a' 12-year sentence for2"treason."
Two other Jews, both over 70, got seven and four years. Correspondent
Rowland Evans, who broke the story, said it "could be a harbinger of
a new anti-Jewish campaign." - -
Five thousand Jews used as slaves by the wartime Farben factories
were granted $5,500,000 compensation, but 3,300 claims "did not meet,
the requirements of the agreement." -
Dr. Melvin Calvin, 50; of the University of California won th
Nobel Chemistry Prize, the second Jewish laureate of 1961.
West Berlin named a, street after the late Dr. Leo Baeck, former
chief rabbi of Berlin, who was incarcerated by the Nazi.
Prof. Mel Ravitz of Wayne State U., became, the first Jew elected
to Detroit's Common Council since 1920.

Three leaders of Moscow's main synagogue were arrested, con-
victed and sentenced on charges not immediately disclosed; one of
them, Wolf Ryshal, 60, had been convicted of "Zionist actiiity" in 1948
and served seven years. -
A Torah that had belonged to the late Rabbi Isaac`M. Wise, founder
of -Reform Judaism in the U.S., was presented 'to President - Kennedy
by. 250 Reform leaders; •
In its first agreement to compensate victims of Nazism living behind
the Iron Curtain, West Germany allotted $6,250 to $10,000 to each of
73 women used in Ravensbrueck "emperiments." -
• The U.S. ' Supreme Court upheld George Lincoln Rockwell's right
to hold a public rally in New York.
