Regarding anti-Semitism, no sub-
stantial-increase could be detect-
ed lately, over its "normal" level.

ible that many Jewish families will
consider seriously the possibility of
emigrating to Israel.
The future here, particularly in
its political aspect, is shrouded in
clouds. Two socio-political models
exist presently in Latin America:
Brazil, with its growing rate of
development, progress and bonan-
za, and Chile and Peru, with their
socialist tendency, which in the
end amounts to paralyzation.
Argentina has not yet defined its
future, but judging from the most
plausible evaluation of the elec-
tions scheduled for March 1973, a
broad socialist coalition will take
power, based on Peronism. The
Jewish community- is in the throes
of its own special and acute crisis,
which we predicted a year ago
and which shows no signs of abat-
ing.

- An inevitable polarization is tak-
ing place in Argentina: -=the rich
grow richer, since they know-how
to protest their fortunes, while the
poor grow poorer by the effects of
the inflation. The lower middle
class is threatened with extinction.
The jewish hospital, the home for
the aged and for orphans and
other beneficent institutions are
trying desperately to cope with
the growing needs of the im-
poverished Jews.
-Both Jewish dailies have pith-
lished anxious appeals to their ad-
vertisers, asking them to pay their
debts and continue supporting the
papers with ads. One of them said
editorially: "It would be a pity if
Buenos Aires were converted spir-
itually into a Cemetery." Obvious-
ly, -in this particular case, the gen-

looked, as the Yiddish-speaking
readers are slowly - dying out..
The Buenos -Aires kehille budget-
ed -for .19'70 some-5500,000 for so-
cial aid; but .had to spend some
$800,000, as it could not deny aid
to people who came asking for
money in Order to satisfy the -hun-
ger of their. children. On the other
hand, the'kehilla receives less in-
come .for cemetery services, due
to the crisis—Unfortunately, in or-
der to satisfy the 12,000 requests
for social aid, the kehilla had to
thin out and spread the amount
budgeted for 5,000- people. This
happened in Buenos Aires, with
the largest Jewish concentration
. (350,000 Jews) south of the Rio
Grande.

Camp Anti-Drug Program Viewed as Successful

class society, has been tested and
proved effective in • the summer
camps of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, according

cy's camp and youth education de-
partment.
Rabbi Leonard Schoolman told
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that, after three years of testing,
the program was being extended
to the UAHC's 700-affiliated con-
gregations. The • premise, he said,
was that the program Could not
reach its goals if it was restricted
