Kibutzim May Lean
Toward Traditional Rites
TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Israel's kib-
utzim, including the Marxist-ori-
ented Hashomer Hatzair, are in-
clining more to traditional Juda-
ism, acording to the afternoon
daily, Maariv.
Many kibutzim observe some Sab-
bath traditions,• such as kindling
of candles, both in the communal
dining hall and in private residen-
tial quarters. Teachers are re-
quired to explain the various tra-
ditional Sabbath customs of the
home.
One kibutz spokesman said, "We
feel a definile need to draw a dis-
tinction between the secular days
of the week and the Sabbath day,
and this explains what we are do-
ing." This- change in attitutde
picked up momentum following the
Six-Day War. There is increasing
attention given this question in the
ideological journals of the kibutz
movement, and in discussions in
conferences and meetings.
