The accomplishments of the Women's Division reflect the energy and perception
of its members. The commitment of the Division is two-fold: to offer the women of
the community a year-round educational program and to raise funds for the Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.
The educational program explains the work of Federation agencies and explores
contemporary problems of Jewish life through forums and institutes. It seeks to in-
volve as many Jewish women as possible in the work of the organized Jewish com-
munity.
"Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Your Jewish Community—But
Never Asked," was the intriguing theme of the two-day Fall Forum in September,
1971. The first session, "Exploration," took the participants on a conducted bus tour
through the history and social agencies of the Detroit Jewish community from suburbs
to inner city. The second meeting, "Discovery," presented a discussion of the Jewish
community by some of those intimately involved with the problems in our metropl–an
area and the services which are trying to solve them.

An in-depth view of local agencies and services was presented at the 1970
Leadership Seminar. Convening at diffrent agencies for six successive weeks last
October and November, the women met with agency directors and toured the
facilities. The Seminar is repeated annually for selected young women in the
community.
The ways in which women can skillfully deal with the problems of con-
temporary society and effect change within the framework of volunteer services
was explored at the 25th Annual Institute. Nearly 400 women attended the one-day
session in December.
New fund-aising techniques were developed by the Women's Division, more
volunteers were involved than ever before, and the results were that Division's
1971 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency broke its own previous impressive
records by raising $1,350,000.

"Under-thirty's" in our community who are conscious of Jewish prob-
lems and needs and willing to commit themselves to dealing with solu-
tions find in the Junior Division an expression of their concern. The Divi-
sion introduces them to the programs of Federation and the services of
its agencies. It serves as an important training ground for future com-
munity leaders.
The Division holds monthly open board meetings at which the prob-
lems of the community are discussed with well-known public figures.
Through these discussions the ideas and goals of the Division are deter-
mined and shared with members of Federation, who give the division
help and encouragement.
The Junior Division sponsors and supports various community pro-
grams. The most widely acclaimed project is the six-year old Summer
Tutorial Program for Detroit children. With the help of volunteers among
high school and college students and professional teachers, nearly 600
youngsters have had an opportunity to improve their reading skills and
to enlarge their cultural horizons.
The Jewish Division's efforts for the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund are marked by continual increases both in dollars col-
lected and numbers of pledges secured. This year more than $62,000 was
collected by the Juniors, a 15O' increase over the previous year. Nearly
500 new pledges were secured, bringing the total number of young bene-
factors up to 1,400.
