Lauinger, who is of German Catholic descent, infiltrated the United Klaus of- America Inc. Pontiac unit and sent reports on the group's _activities to the De- trait FBI office. He explained that one reason he took part in the undercover work was that as a child he belonged to a local branch of the pro-German brownsaiirts. "I thought they were some kind of boy scouts," he said. When he . discovered that a boy- hood friend was Jewish, he realized that the anti-Semitism being preached by the brownshirts was only ethnic stereotype. "I had been playing with him for two or three years — all the while hearing this anti-Semitic junk—and I didn't know he was Jewish until I saw the candles in his house," Lauinger said.
