" .• Japanese Turns Scholastic Interest to Yiddish in Israel JERUSALEM—"I am the only Yiddishist in Japan!" says Kazuo Ugda jokingly, but he becomes serious when he discusses his studies at the Hebrew University: This 28-year-old university lec- turer from Matsuyama City in western Japan is fascinated by the Yiddish language and its literature. Ueda, a Japanese.. student of German who received a bachelor's and master's degree from the Uni- versity of Tokyo, has taught for two years in the German depart- ment at Uni Ehirne University in Matsuyama. While still in graduate school, he was introduced to Yiddish through the diary of Franz 'Calks. Since then he has been intrigued by the language "of whose exist- ence most Japanese German scholars are unaware." He began by studying biblical Hebrew in 1967 at Tokyo Uni- versity and then modern Hebrew at the Jewish Community of Japan in Tokyo. For the past four years be has been teaching himself Yiddish. Often he went to_the only synagogue in Japan in search of assistance, which be found in the person of the young rabbi there. Since July, when he arrived in Israel, Kazuo has been concentrat- ing on his Hebrew at an ulpan, a three-month intensive language course given by the Hebrew Uni- versity for incoming students from abroad.
