HOR D'OURVES,

NEW YORK — The growing in-
cidence of intermarriage "threat-
ens the very survival of the Jewish
community," declared Rabbi Har-
old- I. Saperstein, president of the
New York Board of Rabbis, at a
_special meeting of the officers of
the hoard.
The statement continued:
"Judaism recognizes one who is
- born of a Jewish mother or one
who is sincerely converted to the
Jewish faith as Jewish. If, prior
to the marriage, -the non-Jewish
partner is unwilling to_ join the
Jewish faith, there is little likeli-
hood that the desire for conver-
sion will develop later. Past ex-
perience has shown that vague
promises to study Judaism or to
consider conversion sometime af-
ter marriage are rarely fulfilled.
The result, generally, will be that
the• Jewish - partner's' loyalty' to
Judaism will be dimislied, the
children will be' • alie.nated from'
Jewish identity, and another fam-
ily will be lost tolhe Jewish faith.'
