Noting that crisis situations. fre-

but works "steadfastly toward a

people, the declaration says.

Yom Kippur Quiz

By -RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1571. JTA, Inc.)

Why is the day before Yom
Kippur observed with great
feasting?
In the Talmud-we find .a state-
ment to the effect that whosoever
eats and drinks on the ninth day
of Tishri (i.e., the day before Yom
Kippur) is considered as if-he had .
fasted on both the ninth - and 'the
tenth day of Tishri (the day of
Yom Kippur). (Berakot_81); Yoma
and au-
lb). Some
thors of codes claim that feasting
on the day before. Yom Kippur in-
dicates the nature- of the fast on
the day of Wm Kippur. The feast-
ing on the day before ahows that
there is a- spirit of confidence and
faith in the Almighty and that- the
fasting is done out of -a state of
happiness and dedication to the
Ahnighty, rather than out of .a
state of fear .and frustration.
The 'Jew thus feasts on the day
before Yom. -Kippur ` . because: be
looks forward eagerly to • fasting
and 'being close to Abe Ahnighty,_
becoming almost like an angel whir
has no thought of food -and drink. -
(Orath Chayylin -.604; Maharil.

'web Yom Kippur)-
that the feasting on , the day before
Yom Kippur takes ; vlace because
Yarn Kippur is like any other ma-
jor holiday which .would naturally
require a special-Meal to observe
it (Sendai Mitzva). • Since this

It is interesting to note that
Persian Jews used to follow a
