From the Tourist's Notebook: the ,Joys of Israel

Some things never change.. In
Tel Aviv, a.tourist who had just
finished eating a "sabra" -(prickly
pear) on the street, looked in vain
for a trash basket for the rind.
"Do what the Israelis do,"-' said
the tourist guide, "throw it in the
street. It'll give somebody a job."

In Jerusalem, it's almost a chore
to find a Hebrew accent on the
Jaffa Rd. Thousands of American
youngsters emendated Israel this
summer—and sometimes it looked
as though they were all' in one
spot at one' time. Although some
could 'find no accommodations (the
old bugaboo: agincies overbooked),
they were a happy bunch—many
of them singing at the top of their
lungs despite the heavy packs on
their backs. There's a certain -joy
in mutual adiersity. -

We finally figUred out how
to board a bus at rush hour.
You get to the .bus stop sign
first thing. Keep an eye out for
harmless little old ladies- who
come-up from behind, aid don't
let that nice-looking girl with
the smile' fool you. There's
larceny in their-hearts. In catch-
ing buses there is no—repeat,
no—Geneva. Convention.

Israelis may sniff• at the soft
Americans who take the cable car
up Masada, but we disagree that
one appreciates the experience
more by making that incredible
climb. Masada is the national sym-
bol of Israel, and anyone who sug-
gests an alternative historical view
gets a resounding' boo. With rea-
son. If Shakespeare's writings

A word about El Al airline
stewardesses: They may leave the
impression that they're doing you
a favor, but that's because they
wish to treat you like a member
cf the family. For that matter, on
what other airline - do the pas-
sengers applaud the pilot when he
, lands?

The only father we -heard yell-
ing at his kids was an American
tourist. Israeli children are spoiled,
not with things but with love.

We'd forgotten what Israeli
drivers are like, but it doesn't
take long to remember. All those
new Peugots and-Volkswagens and
the miles and miles of new roads
built with Jewish National Fund
help make not' a particle of dif-
ference to the suicidal motorist
who drives as though it were his
national duty to hit something.

Barbed wire ' enthusiasts (we
learned there is an organization
of such people) have a field day
in the Golan Heights. But'the last
place you expect to find it is
around- the Jerusalem YMCA. If
you ,think it's from the pre-1967
period, however, you're mistaken.
It was put up to keep infiltrating
kids ,out of the. Y pool.

- Our much-maligned Ma -Bell is
.a paragon of virtue compared to
Israel's phone system. One tour-
ist complained to an Israeli that
every time be tried to..make a call
out of his hotel, he got three other
peciple on the line, "When you were
in Paris.".the Israeli asked, "how
many phone calls. did you make?"
- "None"' the, tourist responded:
"I don't know anyone in Paris."
"And how many people do you
know in Israel?"
•"About fire."
Explained the -Israeli: "Every
tourist knows five people he wants
to call. Our phone system was not
so great before, but if you multiply
it by 30,000 tourists with five

phone calls each-that explains the own -traditional manner,:-_
