36 Pious Men
in Every Age

There is a tradition which
claims that there_ are always, in
every generation, 36 pious men
who sustain the world.
The Bible mentions the supposi-
tion that righteous men are the
foundation of the world (Prov.
10:25). The Talniud sometimes
mentions that every generation h'as
thirty men comparable. to -Abra-
ham, Isaac and Jacob., The Al-
mighty is said to have promised
Abraham that there, would always
be such a number_ of men in the
world. The first to introduce' the
number 36 was a 4th Century rabbi
who wrote in the Talmud: "The
world is never without 36 men.
who daily encounter the Divine
Presence." The rabbi derives this
from a computation of the Hebrew
word "him" which refers to the
Almighty in the verse "Happy are
they that hope in Him."
(Is. 30:18).
The German Hasidic-mystic
movement of the 13th Century gave
rise to the belief that there are
these 36 men whose deeds and
whose identity is obscured so that
the whole concept receives some-
what of an esoteric character.
Generally speaking, 'the tradition
serves` as a matter of encouraging
the feeling of modesty and reserve
—pointing to the fact that, indeed,
the 36 greatest men in the world
are mysteriously hidden and that
their 'piety is not a matter of pub-
lic display.

On the Sabbath the synagogue
services begin later than they do
during the week.
The answer is a very practical
one from one point. of view.'-The:
morning services during the week
must be completed early in the
day so that the peoPle_ can' get to
their work or businiss on 'time:
On the Sabbath, when there is no
such compelling factor, the serv-
ices. can begin later. There are
authorities who feel that it is
especially required to begin the
Sabbath services later than the
weekday services for religious -rea-
sons. They point to the fact that,
while the Bible speaks of offer-
ing the weekday sacrifice in the
morning, it speaks:of offering the
Sabbath sacrifices -- on'. :1he , "day"
of the. Sabbath. •
The reason behind this is that
every attempt was made to por-
tray the Sabbath as a day of
leisure- compared to the pressing
schedule of work on the week:-
day.• .
Thus, the services started later
to emPhasize the leisurely and rest-
ful nature of the - Sabbath.
