`Black Hebrews' Who Gained Israel Asylum Now Call Country 'Racist'

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A leader
of the self-styled Black Hebrews
who began coming to Israel from
the United States two years ago
and are demanding citizenship,
laid claim to the land of Israel

at an impromptu press conference
near the Jaffa Gate.
Ben Ami (formerly Ben Carter)
claimed that "Moses and Abraham
were definitely Blacks and thus
the so-called Jewish immigrants
from Russia and America are no
more than usurpers." But, he went
on: "We want them to remain if
they recognize us as the children,
of the God of Israel."
Carter accused the government
of being a "racist, Jim Crow coun-
try." He contended that the state
and rabbinate refused to give them
equal rights, housing education
or jobs because they were not con-
sidered Jewish.
The first of the group arrived
in 1969 after an unsuccessful at-
tempt to settle in Liberia and
were given resident status and

Police investigators first thought
that the Jewish leader might be
held for ransom by one of the
Palestinian organizations but the
"Palestinian Joint Command"
Wednesday released an official
communique claiming that "No
Palestinian has been directly or
indirectly involved in the affair."
None of the more extremist
Palestinian organizations has
claimed responsibility for the
kidnaping as they usually do.

The local authorities do not be-
lieve that Atallah has secretly
left the country as he never ex-
pressed any intention of doing so,
and moreover official circles say
that he could have left legally and
openly had he so desired.

Atallah was reportedly forced
into a car while he walked through
the predominantly Jewish quarter
of Abou Jamil. Police say that
in spite of the hour — the kid-
naping took place at noon — none

The French paper Le Monde
reports from Beirut that the
Lebanese government is taking "a
very grave view" of the incident
in view of the fact that another
Jewish businessman. Edouard
Sassoun, was murdered in his of-
fice in downtown Beirut more
than two years ago and his mur-
derers have not been found.

The Lebanese government has
always in the past tried to prove
that it will not tolerate any anti-
Jewish discrimination and has
steadfastedly advocated a line
claiming that Lebanon was a
united country in spite of the
ethnic differences of its inhabi-
tants. The authorities fear that
should this week's incident pass
by unpunished, this could serious-
ly undermine the confidence of
its inhabitants.
