Falls III From U.S. Soup

UJA Mission Dines With Golda Meir

WASHINGTON — The Food and
Drug Administration reported this
week that an American in Israel
has been in a coma for a week
after eating contaminated canned
soup sent to him by a friend in
the U. S.
Michael Alan Segel, 27, was
found unconscious, and the resi-
due in an empty vichyssoise can
discovered in his kitchen was
tested and found to contain botulin
toxin. He was listed in critical
condition, and antitoxin was sent
from London.
Segel reportedly received the
soup in a gift package sent in May
by a friend through a Chicago
1 epartment store.

14 Ulpanim Organized

NEW YORK—The "Ulpan Cen-
ter" of the World Zionist Organi-
zation's American Section will op-
erate 14 locations for the fall term,
beginning during the week of Oct.
13, for instruction in modern He-
brew.
Conducted jointly by the Theodor
Herzl Institute and the World Zion-
ist Organization's department of
education and culture, the Ulpan
Center conducts classes for be-
ginners, intermediate and advanced
students. Some 1,500 men and
women, over 17 years of age, are
expected to enroll for these courses
in conversational Hebrew. Each
course includes 30 sessions in a
15-week period.

A panel of experts on social serv.
ices in the metropolitan area will
give an inside view of the Jewish
community's agencies which help
solve the problems of people in
the area, on Sept. 23, at the second
of the fall forum sessions of the
women's division of the Jewish
Welfare Federation.
The "Discovery" session will be
held at 12:30 p.m. at the Jewish
Center.
Alan D. Kandel, director of so-
cial planning for the Federation;
Mrs. Charles Lakoff, president of
the Neighborhood Service Organi-
zation and former president of the
Jewish Family and Children's
Service; and Richard Strichartz,
general counsel and acting director
of the Center for Urban Studies,
Wayne State University, will talk
on different aspects of the prob-
lems of people in the metropolitan
area.
The first session ,of the fall
forum, "Exploration," is a bus
tour of facilities of Jewish agencies

from the northern suburbs to the
inner city. It will start at 10 a.m.
next Thursday, from the United
Hebrew Schools, 21550 W. 12 Mile.
Mrs. John L. Greenberg is chair-
man of fall forum, with Mrs. My-
ron LaBan as chairman for the
"Discovery" session assisted by
Mrs. Stuart LaKind, co-chairman.
The two-session forum is open
to all women who gave to the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emer-
gency Fund. Reservations may be
made at the women's division of-

Mrs. Irving Dworman, together with WILPF (Women's International
League for Peace and Freedom) members Mrs. Harry Riseman and
Jean Holtzman, who serve an the Detroit Committee for UNICEF, are
helping man the UNICEF booth at the Michigan State Fair. The public
is invited to the booth in the Gold Building through Sunday, to re-
ceive literature and watch a film showing 'UNICEF projects.
Mrs. Rose Bakst of Borman Hall recently hosted her niece Mrs.
Shoshana Kaminer of Ramat Gan, Israel. Mrs. Kaminer is the sole
survivor of her family, having migrated to Israel from Europe with
friends in 1935. The two women had never met. Also visiting were her
daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Yale. Kahn of San Diego.
The Bodzin Family Club will meet 8 p.m. Sunday at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Bodzin, 23031 Webster, Oak Park. Election of officers
will be held. Yetta Bodzin will be welcomed back after a year's stay
in Israel.
Out-of-town guests here for the wedding of Patricia Williams to
Glenn Sikora Sunday afternoon included Eric Ager of Chicago, the
Aba Triflers and AN/rum Grubers of Toronto, Mrs. Sylvia Brilliant and
