The new Labor Zionist Institute,
Middlebelt, Farmington, will
be ready for occupancy on or be-
fore Oct. 15, Harry Schumer,
president of the board of trustees,
and Morris Lieberman, chairman
of the board, announce.
The new building, designed by
Morris A. Lifshay Associates, will
serve the divisions of the Labor
Zionist movement, comprising the
United Labor Zionist Organization
of America, Farband-Labor Zion-
ist Order, Habonim Labor Zionist
Youth and the Detroit Council of
Pioneer Women.
The building also will house the
offices of the Israel Histadrut
Campaign of Metropolitan Detroit,
facilities for the Combined Jewish
Schools of the Labor Zionist Move-
ment and the Lubavitcher office
and school.

Neighborhood Shul for Holidays

As Detroit synagogues move
farther and farther out to keep
up with a mobile Jewish popula-
tion, there are fewer and fewer
shuls for the observant within De-
troit.
Often it is the elderly, the handi-
caped, the lower-income seg-
ments of the community who are
the first to suffer. For want of a
house . of prayer, they pray at
home.
Four years ago, a Blackstone
Manor resident pledged to do
something about it and founded a
synagogue to accommodate his
Eight Mile-Schaefer neighbors on
the High Holy Days.
Until that time Sam Karpel, 78,
had worshiped regularly at other
synagogues, but one after another
moved. His own frail health, and
that of his wife, Fannie, 7Z, pre-
vented him from walking any
great distance to a synagogue.
The Blackstone congregation
is related to the Blackstone
Club, which Karpel virtually
moved heaven and earth to
establish. The apartment man-
agement has provided the resi-
dents with a clubroom, where
themembersplay cards and can
socialize.
The clubroom, where services
are held, can accommodate only
38 persons, and Mrs. Karpel said
she has sad to turn away appli-
cants. Tickets, which are $12,
cover the cost of hall rental and
payment to the officiating cantor,
who is hired specifically for the
High Holy Days.
Mr. Karpel's illness has pre-
vented him from attending holiday
services in his own shul for the
past two years. In fact, last year,
when he was near death with
pneumonia, t h e congregants
prayed for him on Yom Kippur.
His recovery is considered a
minor miracle to the neighbors,
but Mr. Karpel is convinced
"Somebody up there likes me."
Last week, he fell, "but God saw
and put a pillow under me," he
told his wife.
Mr. Karpel, who at one time
owned crockery and hardware
stores on Oakland, Dexter and
Hastings, once was known as
"Sam, the Pushcart Man," "and
every old lady in the neighborhood
has something they once bought
from him," said Mrs. Karpel.
She supports his efforts for a
synagogue, but admits that in al-
most 55 years of marriage—after
three children, nine grandchildren
and one great-grandchild — "the
only fight we've ever had is over
the shul. It's too much work for
one old man. We need some young
people to help us. If we only had
money, we'd have services every
Saturday, but rental costs $20 a
week, and we don't have that kind
of money. There are lots of Jewish
people living here, but mostly

Her neighbors don't think she's
a mizva shirker either. One crip-
pled woman Who recently had an
eye operation came looking for a
holiday seat and was told there
were none left. "She cried so. I
couldn't take it. I gave her my
seat," said Mrs. Karpel. She
shrugged. "So, I'll daven at
home."

Mr. Fleishman's Wife

Helen Wainer, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Michael H. Wainer of
Fairfax Ave., Southfield, to Morris
Edward Fleishman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Nathan Fleishman of Creve
Coeur, Mo., was announced at a
dinner given by the senior Fleish-
mans in St. Louis.
Miss Wainer is a senior in ele-
mentary education at Wayne State
University. Mr. Fleishman received
a bachelor of science in civil en-
gineering at Washington Univer-
sity, St. Louis, and is completing
work on a master of business ad-
ministration at the University of
Iowa.
A June wedding is planned
in Detroit.

Sinai Diabetic Classes
for Patients, Families

A series of five classes for dia-
betic patients and their families
will be offered by Sinai Hospital
of Detroit 7 p.m. Thursdays be-
ginning next week in Sinai's
Shapero School of Nursing.
