BENNETT CERF

Bennett Cerf, popular author of
humor books and newspaper col-
umns, whose "Try and Stop Me"
was published frequently in The
Jewish News, died Aug. 27. He
was 73. Mr. Cerf was the organ-
izer and president of Random
House and many best sellers ap-
peared under his direction. He
published Joyce's "Ulysses" and
the best selling "House Dictionary
of the American Language."

Nathan Leopold Dead;
Convicted Thrill Killer

Nathan F. Leopold, the
killer who, with Richard Loeb, a
fellow student, murdered 14-year-
old Bobby Franks, son of their
neighbor in Chicago, in quest for
a thrill, died in
Puerto Rico, Sun-
day night. Loeb
was murdered in
a prison cell
fight in 1936.
Leopold was re-
leased from pris-

on in 1958, after
serving his sentence for 33 years.
Leopold and Loeb were saved
from a death sentence in the de-
fense that was conducted by
Clarence Darrow in 1923. They
were 19 and 18 respectively and
both were University of Michigan
honor students.

Charles P. Feinberg, retired De-
troit lumberman, died. Aug. 26 at
age 72.
Mr. Feinberg, a resident of
Miami Beach, retired 20 years ago
as owner of the State Lumber Co.
at John R and State Fair and John
R and Eleven Mile Rds. He was
active in Ashler Masonic Lodge
and was past president and organ-
izer of the Chaplains Committee
for Jackson State Prison. He was
a World War I veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy;
and two sons, Daniel and William;
and a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Allen.
