Selihot and the Days of Awe BY CHARLES REISMAN The current Hebrew month, Elul, is part of a period called the Days of Awe. During this period, Jews through- out the world start preparing for the days of judgment, Rosh Ha- shana and Yom Kippur, by the blowing of the Shofar and by the saying of Selihot. During this month, the shofar is blown every day after the morn- ing service, except for Rosh Ha- shana eve. This is done "to help remind people that they should start look- ing over their past actions," ex- plained Rabbi Chaskel Grubner of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis. said at midnight because that was when King David used to say spe- cial prayers. Although Selihot is said once a day in most places, Sephardic Jews say it morning and eve- evenings. The Sephardic Jews also have a custom of starting to say Selihot from the beginning of Elul. In the Reform movement, Selihot services are being held in an in- creasing number of temples. Frank Simons, administrator at Temple Israel, one of the few Reform congregations in Detroit that will hold Selihot services this year, believes that "this is part of an over-all trend toward more in the way of tradition by liberal Reform congregations." During the period that starts as early as a week and a half to four days before Rosh Ho- shana and continues up until Yom Kippur, Selihot prayers that ask for forgiveness are said. This year it will start Sept. 12, a week before Rosh Hashana. "Liberal," he explained, "in the sense that we feel that per- haps Reform went too far in disregarding previous practices."
