Two Slum 'Mothers to the People' Win Jerusalem Good Citizenship Awards
By K. 0. PETERSON
JERUSALEM — Opposite the
Knesset lies the district of Nahalat
Ahim, one of Jerusalem's slums.
Its poverty confirms that Israel
is still very much a developing
country.
All the laws concerning social
welfare which have been passed
by the neighboring Knesset during
the 23 years of its existence have
so far been able to do no more
than alleviate somewhat the prob-
lems of poverty in the state of
Israel.
For being "mothers to the peo-
ple" the Jerusalem municipality
has just awarded Leah Sharavi
and Bracha Kapach, both of
Nahalat Ahim, the "Jerusalem
prize for good citizenship," estab-
lished several years ago by Dr.
Israel Goldstein.
Fifteen years before the state
was founded, Leah Sharavi came
with nothing. She was 14.
Betrothed at age 10 to a
teacher who has since become
a rabbi, she has none of her own
children but has mothered many,
including two of the seven chil-
dren of her sister who was
widowed during the War of
Independence.
search out people to whom
I can be of use," she said, mean-
ing that at one time she did so
literally: going about the slum in
search of those who needed help
and were too ill, or too proud,
33 Israeli Firms Join
in Trade Fair in Greece
ATHENS (JTA)—Greek Prime
Minister George Papadopoulos
opened the Israeli stand at the
36th international trade fair of
Thessaloniki and expressed his
"admiration for the progress
achieved by Israel in the field of
industry."
Some 33 Israeli firms are par-
ticipating this year in the exhibit
at the Israeli stand which is man-
aged by Amnon Kotler of the Is-
raeli Ministry of Commerce and
Industry.
Israeli-Greek trade is moving
fast. Last year's exports from Is-
rael to Greece amounted to prod-
ucts worth $17,000,000, while Is-
_imported $4,000,000 worth of

to ask for it.
Quite recently she noted a fam-
ily of 13-11 children, the oldest
not yet old enough to join the
army, and their parents—living
in one room. At night they spread
cardboard and rags on the earthen
floor, and sleep on these, in their
clothes, as they have no blankets.
Every year toward winter, Leah
Sharavi's sitting room becomes a
store—and she herself washes and
mends the clothing donated to her
for the poor.
"There are many old people
who have no one," she said, "either
because they are alone in the
world or because their children
have left them and have no regard
for them." She visits them regu-
larly, with a supply of cooked
foods from her own kitchen, al-
ways prepared to stay and clean
up or to do some shopping—or
to talk.
The money which is given to her
for charity she expends not only
on necessities but also on "mak-
ing people joyful on occasion"—
providing for a Bar Mitzva or a
wedding in such a way that at
least once in their lives the under-
privileged may know a happiness
equal to that of others.
The other prize recipient, Bracha
Kapach, also from Yemen, come to
Israel in 1943, married at 19 to
a husband who is a rabbi. So that
she might care both of her family
and for her neighbors, she starts
her day at 4:30 in in the morning.
Various welfare organizations
both in Israel and abroad chan-
nel their help to the residents
of this and other Jerusalem
slums through this rabbi's wife,
who adds to it, what she can,
from her own pocket. The tax on
parcels of clothing sent from
abroad is paid by the rabbi. Be-

Soviet Jewry` Evening Set
for Madison Square Event
NEW YORK (JTA) — An even-
ing on behalf of Soviet Jewry will
be held at Madison Square Garden
here Dec. 13, the second night
of Hanuka. Entitled "Freedom
Lights for Soviet Jewry," the pro-
gram will feature "the Leningrad
Trials," a dramatic presentation
written by Michael Pozin, a recent
Jewish Russion emigre to Israel.
A spokesman for the Center for
Russian Jewry, which is sponsor-
ing the event in cooperation with
the Jewish communities and Soviet
Jewry committees of the greater
New York, New Jersey and Con-
necticut area, said the event would
provide an opportunity for Jews in
the metropolitan area "to show
the Russian government and our
own political leaders that Ameri-
can Jews are very deeply con-
cerned about the plight of our
brothers in the Soviet Union."
Proceeds from the event will
be used to continue the Soviet
Jewry movement, especially the
education an0 action programs of
the center and the Student Strug-
gle for Soviet Jewry, the spokes-
man said.
