THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 14—Friday, September 3, 1971 JDL'ers Freed in DC; Kahane to Arm Residents Math Genius Named Full Professor at 22 WASHINGTON (JTA) — Three members of the Jewish Defense League, all college students from New York City, were freed Friday of charges of unlawful entry onto Soviet Embassy grounds here. Chief Judge Harold H. Greene of Superior Court dismissed the action, brought by the Metropoli- tan Police, after the Embassy failed to produce a complaining witness to substantiate the charge against Arie Illowitz, 18; Joseph Weiss. 19; and Gene Kleinhedler 18. The trial without jury of Rabbi Meir Kahane, national JDL chair- man, and three other members was concluded Wednesday, with Judge Greene reserving decision. The JDL'ers had been charged with demonstrating within 500 feet of the embassy. CHARLES FEFFERMAN CHICAGO — Perhaps the young- est man ever to hold a lull pro- fessorship at a major university is Charles L. Fefferman, a 22- year-old mathematicial genius who has been appointed to lifetime tenure at the University of Chi- cago. Dr. Fefferman became inter- ested in math in the fourth grade and began taking college courses at the University of Maryland at 14. At 15, he published his first research paper and at 20, received his doctorate at Princeton. He came to Chicago as a teaching fellow last year. Charges against Michael Le- Bovich and Kenneth J. Gorelick, two of the six Jewish Defense League members on trial here, were dismissed earlier for lack of evidence. Prosecuting attorney John C. Lenahan told Chief Judge Harold Greene of the District's Superior Court that the six were demon- strating within 80 feet of the Soviet embassy on June 25. However, police could not identify LeBovich or Gorelick and charges against them were dropped.
